It depends how you define 'as a last resort'. I don't think we were scraping the barrel when either player was given a game. In fact, both retained their places once their senior counterpart was fit. Every squad contains players who are only really called upon when their superior counterparts are injured. It's called having a squad.

Yates retaining his place when Purkiss was fit was silly. But given Purkiss is in his 30s and doesn't stay fit for a season, it makes sense to have a right back in the squad.

I stand corrected, you are right...though that first season was disrupted somewhat. He did sign Kelly who I think will come good and likewise Hooper who has shown promise.

Why shunt around players who will presumably be already playing for the first XI, when there is a cheap, reliable and trusted replacement already at the club?

Hooper yes and I hope that he will have a good season next year. I still think kelly has improvements to make judging on the walsall game. He came on and I couldn't tell where he was meant to be playing and he kept jumping out the way of tackles. However he's scored a few good goals and shown promise in other games.

Not if both are already in the first 11, no. Also, is Duffy actually any good at right back? Bar Rotherham on Boxing Day in the promotion season, I can't remember him ever playing well there.

Its like retained list Groundhog Day!.....the same crap decision from Page regarding the same players (Johnson, Yates, Birchall, Lloyd). And the same b0ll0cks from certain mardarses on here who jump all over anyone that criticises him or his decisions.

 

On the bright side at least he saw sense to get rid of McGivern.

I doubt they'll both be playing at the same time. Smith and Duffy aren't the ideal partnership against the likes of bury and bradford. I think a priority is a tall strong centre half. Niall canavan may be someone we could look at. I'd like to see a big no nonsense defender partnered with either duffy, streete or smith but if purkiss is out long term then I don't think yates would fill his boots, and surely if it was short term we could find a makeshift rightback.

Why have a makeshift right back when we have a more than adequate one already at the club who the manager trusts, is cheap and can offer support in different positions? You seem to be so desparate to get shot of the guy that you're ignoring what's logical.

Its just a way of cutting down the wage which we can use in weaker positions, if other people can cover then do we need another one? And I don't think a makeshift would do that worse than yates.
