I told 'em Oldham

Can't disagree with those comments. Although I did think it might have been a closer result, Their campaign clearly didn't ignite, but I have to say that I'm personally delighted that Ukip hasn't made any more strides.

However, to put the result into some sort of context, and to put a little perspective onto the matter, Labour's majority was in fact reduced and it is one of those northern constituencies (much like Stoke-On-Trent) where Labour losing the seat would be more than an just an upset, it would be an absolute catastrophe for Labour. Anyone with a red rosette would be totally useless if they lost in a constituency such as Oldham. Those type of towns are not a real test of whether Jeremy has won over anyone other than his own tribe--many voters interviewed said that they'd never heard of Jeremy Corbyn, but still voted Labour! (Sorry Mr. H, but on his particular point, I do think the exclamation mark is warranted).

Aside from Corbyn. Stoke on Trent is not part of the Northern Powerhouse. That is a problem as is even the fact that Crewe is the main line station in the local area. I'm serious when I say the city could be about to lose out significantly through obscurity and something needs to be done about it.

A picture paints a thousand words. I have just seen a picture of Corbyn visiting Oldham standing next to the new MP Jim McMahon. Jim is smartly dressed. He looks like a person with experience who represents a major public body in the form of the Council. He looks like someone you would trust to receive delegated powers and to help implement the Northern Powerhouse. He looks like other senior local government Labour leaders in Liverpool and Manchester etc. Corbyn does not. once again he terms up informally dressed at a public event and the best I can say is that he has a reasonably new jacket. I cringe at the idea of him ever being alongside a major international figure such as the German Chancellor or French President. He is a consistent let down aside from his left wing views. He looks like the set of losers from Greece in the way he dresses and I suspect is likely to be as poor if ever in office.

The city may be saved now that Labour are not running the show and HS2 might help the whole area.

The easy part of becoming a PM is getting a Saville Row suit and a reflective coat. I doubt if he will ever need them though, his function is the messenger, someone else could stand up in a posh suit and waffle when questioned.

HS2 is a complete waste of money and no more than a line which synchronizes with the line from Paris to Dover...It is a EU project and we are being lined up for being part of an EU superstate. And the only people that will benefit are the richest 10%

The West Coast line will reach its capacity on the London - Rugby section within the build timescale. Providing an alternative route allows for High Speed Trains which could be Double Deckers. The old 4 track line can then be used to increase commuting and freight trains.

It's the increased share of the vote, the collapse of the Tory vote, the failure of UKIP to gain that matter more than the fact Labour won.

If they had won with a 2000 majority it would have been a very different story - they'd have still won, but this is a great victory for them and it is churlish not to acknowledge that.

Its a by election, in a labour stronghold, at the same time as a vote to bomb another country, its about as important as JCs sock colour.

It doesnt matter how many votes you win a seat by if you already hold it

It shows the shallowness of the electorate if they vote for a suit instead of the case they make

Didn't think I'd see the day when the Tories pushed for an EU superstate!

And I don't know why people are bleating on about the Northern Powerhouse. Osborne bull to appease an under-nourished North West. It'll peter out by the end of the next election campaign, by which time Labour Authorities will have all sold out to an elected mayor - that's what Osborne is really after!

It does when a lot of pundits and blue-coloured press were predicting a possible shock. Then, to win convincingly with an increased share of the vote, certainly does mean something!

Should have said, totally agree HS2 is a total waste of money. When you think what 50 billion quid could do to rejuvenate business, infrastructure and create jobs - sickening waste really, second only to replacing a nuclear weapon you never intend to use.

3 Billion a year for infrastructure to last 100 years. Lots of jobs to plan and build the line. Lets hope the trains are built in Britain. Still plenty of money for your plans, same place as the bankers found it from.

The size of the majority is important in a safe seat - the headlines would have been VERY different if Labour had won by just 1000 votes for example, Farage would have been ecstatic, the UKIP bandwagon is rolling etc etc...... and for someone who thinks it is so unimportant, less than JC's sock colour, you are awfully vocal on the subject and devoting a lot of time to it... but that's good, shows deep down you think it is important.:)
