What do you do when on a dual carriageway/motorway and a lane closes?

Makes absolute sense if you have due consideration for other drivers. It's a similar rule when you drive in some places, usually junctions, on the Channel Islands (called filter in turn). In the USA they call it zipper merging.... in other words, the two lanes merge car by car like a zip.

Trouble is, no matter where you are and who you are, we all have a tendency to want to get there first.

Correct Tone, the example of the Channel islands is exactly how it should be.(in turn at roundabouts aswell)

This is what you should do apparently.

Agree or not?

Dunner look like the avatar you carry has taken any notice though does it??

True wherever you go there is always one or more that crog right up to the final point of any roadworks or junctions etc so as to beat every other reasonable driver. They are parasites and one of my pet hates in driving. Smug sods simply put their hand up to "suggest" thanks for all pulling back to allow them on their way. They feel they are the only ones on the road and we all are totalling along with nowhere to go or time schedules to keep ourselves!

OMG, you have got me started on bad road habits! I could write a book on things seen and experienced whilst behind the wheel. Bring back my old Lambretta so I can flip in and out of any traffic situations. Miss my old scooter , I do. :kiss:Lambretta rules.

The thing is, crogging in (especially on a motorway when the signs say "Lane Closed" and you can see a million cones ahead) is only one of countless things we all do as drivers that highlights our selfishness. Speeding is just the same, not letting someone out of a side street in slow-moving traffic, parking illegally, not giving signals, the list is endless.

I have to say, I did that when I was young but I am a bit more conscious of the dangers these days. I steer as clear as possible from traffic.

I have to drive home from work every day in such a situation, and I don't care what patronising crap he says, I'm straddling both lanes every time to stop those selfish *******s who think they are have more right to get home quicker than the rest and try to drive all the way to the obstruction then force their way in. It's not as though people have slowly merged together on this road. Everyone actually starts in the one lane, and you have to pull out to push back in again. They aren't doing it to follow the Highway Code. I doubt they know it any better than the rest. They are doing it because they are selfish.

Unless you're in Houston, where it's the survival of the fittest in motoring terms.

They never signal either, which drives me mad sometimes. Some of the worst drivers I've ever seen.

I have a neighbour from Venezuela, and he says that Caracas is is probably one of the worst cities in the world for driving.

It is strange how often motorists do merge in turn when driving away from football matches. I see this on High Lane every other Saturday and it is done as a matter of common courtesy not by instruction. The best example of frustrating the croggers I saw was when two HGVs occupied both lanes that were merging into one.

Generally speaking, drivers in England are much more courteous than here. I mentioned what we call a "zipper merge", I didn't say anyone actually practices it. I tell a lie, they do coming out of our church.... ;)

Might have something to do with good feelings/courtesy toward a fellow Football fan that one.

I drive in excess of 50,000 miles each year and believe me I see all types of selfish/dangerous/illegal driving up and down the country every day. The older I get the more I have come to realise that young/old/males/females have declined into very awful driving habits, so much so that the majority of people now don't even consider some of the mad antics as being mad!

Bad habits unfortunately become the norm to some and it's now a situation whereby "sod you Jack, I'm all right and if you don't like it I'll get out of my vehicle and punch you!!" That is others of course, not me.:) Sad indictment of today's society I'm afraid.

Conna stand those who straddle both lanes to stop people using the outside lane..yes we should all merge ASAP and not rock up to the obstruction but equally why do something dangerous and be a selfish pr!ck just to mae a point

This annoys me n'all.

I came across the zip instruction in New Zealand. Makes perfect sense and I try to do just that when I can.

I like the lane-straddling. I've done it a couple of times though I'm always slightly worried that it might end in a road rage incident.

Speeding isn't selfish. It's my way of clearing the road for other drivers by getting home ASAP.

I think the merge in turn thing (I don;t see it around my way though I saw it lots in Bristol) works well, but the signs need to be there in road works so people understand the etiquette and abide by the rules.
