Is everyone aware of changes to the offside rule this season?

What is the new 'interfering' ruling?

An amendment to what assistant referees must take into consideration when deciding whether an attacking player is 'interfering with an opponent' or 'gaining an advantage'.

 

Webb says: "The change just revolves around how players who challenge for the ball are now penalised in terms of interfering with an opponent.

 

"So if you are just stood somewhere nearby but not challenging for the ball [when it is played through] and not challenging the opponent, then the assistant referee will not intervene and won't penalise you.

 

"It is when the player challenges for the ball, that's when they are going to be penalised."

The chorus of abuse given to officials when someone is in an offside position but not interfering makes me laugh every time.

I actually think its a daft rule, because by being there in the centre of the action is interfering in play in my opinion, and has an impact as to what the defenders do. If you are running back then fair enough.

I think anyone standing in an offside position, interfering or not, from within the penalty area should be offside. They may not go for the ball but they certainly change what a defender would or wouldn't do.

And as soon as a new 'phase' begins, they're onside, and will take advantage of having been in an offside position to begin with.

I find it funny how fans rip into refs,over offsides.

Quite a few just havnt a clue,but get so irate.

like players not interfering,players not being offside in a 2nd phase,thst were before.

It was Kenny Dalglish who said "if he isn't interfering with play, what is he doing on the pitch?"

It's a fair point - these players who stand deliberately offside on the chance when the cross comes in they will have drifted back onside are pushing the boundaries - defenders always mark to the most advanced player, even when he is off. The best attackers trade on this, and always take the risk that the lino will miss it. Many then score, glance at the linesman, and go in to the kissing the badge routine....
