Oi Whelan. Stick to bankrolling your tinpot outfit and ***** sports shops for pikeys. If you want me to do a minutes silence for her you can personally come round my house and suck my ****.

So, let's get this straight. If Dave Whelan comes round to your house and sucks your ****, you'll observe a minute's silence for Thatcher? Don't have much in the way of expectations or principles do you?

The reason that sport in general, let alone football, gets scant mention in 'The Downing Street Years' is becuase the lady had no interest in it. Particularly football.

A very good piece below, shows not only that the demented old bat wanted to withdraw from the Moscow olympics, but also wanted England out of the 1982 World Cup becuase of the Falklands war, and that she wanted a detested memebership cards scheme after the 80s disasters. Obviously, seating was not really far enough for her - and there is mention of her wanting to close down professional football completely.

I like the anecdote about her commenting on a player who never played when she did go to a match, but it is more revealing that she was such a dictator that nobody around her dared tell her.

As for the argument about Labour, that's rather too far offtopic but were it not for the Falklands War, labour would ceratinly have been back in power in the mid-80s, as Thatcher was on one of the lowest poll ratings ever and the economy was in a far worse state than in the 70s just before Argentina gifted her that victory.

So one minute you're saying she was desperate to get all-seater stadia and it was all her idea and next minute you're telling us she had not interest in sport at all?? Look at this bit from the link you provided:

"though it is undeniable that she and her government were obsessed with hooliganism, as they saw it, rather than the need for clubs like Bradford City, scene of the 1985 fire, and Sheffield Wednesday to make football stadiums safe."

Seems to suggest she didn't give a stuff about all-seater stadia?

Typical Tory anti working class clap trap utter ****** of the highest order!

"

And where might English football be now, had Thatcher allowed football to wither on the vine of feral violence and tribal hooliganism? "

What did she actually do to stop football violence ??? Sweet FA .

She's dead and gone now , so it's all irrelevant. She hated a lot of different people. The Irish, miners, all hard working people, as well as anyone down on their luck. She wasn't responsible for Heysel though, or even Hillsborough. Liverpool fans are to blame for Heysel, and a combination of very bad stewarding/policing , and late arriving crowds of well inebriated fans for Hillsborough. Not to mention a huge cover-up by the authorities. Thatcher was lucky to reach an old age after narrowly escaping the Brighton hotel bombing. Had she been in her bathroom that night she would have been killed. I'm surprised that the IRA were the only ones to attempt killing her.

Politics and sport do not mix..but love the idea of a sport thatcher baiting..she ruined british manufacturing and industry and no tear will be shed by me(also just to correct part of your statement drink and the fans were NOT the cause of hillsborough, nor late arrivals ,fact as proven the police cover story she backed (and new was a lie)has well and truly been exposed)

I'd absolutely love it if the government made it compulsory to have a minutes silence at footie matches, I haven't belted out "The Red Flag" at the top of me voice for years.

Mind you, as ever, Owen Jones wrote well on this subject before she shuttled off;

With respect, I'd disagree. Bradford was not a seating issue and the words 'making safe' do not necessarily indicate seating, as safety can include fencing, more barriers and many many other things. Please do not try to put words into my mouth - I never said she was 'desperate' for all-seater grounds. She had no interest in sport, that is detailed in many places including the current BBC website - but of course with the deluge opf headlines that came, she was forced to take some action.

My argument is that she took the wrong action, following the Taylor report. She wanted to take more drastic action as well, typically coming up with an extreme response but deserves a modicum of credit for being persuaded otherwise.

I'd urge all to read the link fully and see what her real attitudes were.
