Port Vale v Walsall match thread - Dec 7th

Carlisle are undefeated in 4 games, and Bromley are undefeated in 5 games.

With the exception of Swindon (at the moment), there are very few gimme games in this division and every team on their day can beat every other.

We do seem to be getting teams when they are on a good run, don't we.

The lads will be fired up for this, no question.

The gaffer in his post match was professionally, quietly and gently critical that we need to take the sword to any of our opponents 😀

So its set to be an absolute corker of a game. Can't wait. I'd like Rauri and Ronan to start. In 45 mins of football or so the Irish Dynamo has an assist and a goal, so in my eyes simply has to start.

No matter what the team it will be different gravy to last night.

The lads are going to war 🤣

Bring it on. UTV 💪 🙏 👌

Be a good start if someone could put a reducer or two in on that Stoke <ovf censored> Lowe early on. See how much he fancies it then. Should get the home crowd going if nowt else.

You’d think Paton and Curtis have to start this one. I know he had a difficult night last night I wouldn’t be so quick to jettison Tolaj from the squad either, I think he’s a bit of a James Wilson in that he needs a run of games to get going so keep him involved. Their defence can be exploited, saw their game with Bromley who play a similar style to us and they did struggle with it. Time to put our best foot forward for this one.

Really hope we go positive on this one and not sit in hoping just to nick it

I've defended Moore's safety-first approach for a while. We're top of the league and the game he went high-line/high-press we looked a right old mess at home to Doncaster. Our record of score, then hold an excellent shape to see out a comfortable win has worked really well, and is a staple of the Darren Moore diet.

I do now think there's a very good argument we need to be more front-footed on Saturday. Our direct, back to front style was built on a target man who is off the boil. We're sitting deep, inviting pressure, going long to hit teams on the break, and it isn't sticking.

In addition, Walsall are in good form but have conceded a fair few goals - 9 in their last 3. There's a vulnerability there. It's not like they're getting unlucky either - their xG numbers are broadly reflecting how many they're conceding. They're giving up decent chances.

Richards, Benicio, Curtis, and Paton are probably all within their rights to want a start, and I think at least 3 of the 4 should be starting Saturday. With the fitness of John and Hart, we finally have two out and out fullbacks who can contribute to both sides of the game - potentially freeing us up for an extra attacker.

Walsall will be preparing for us to line up 343, but I wouldn't mind seeing:

Ripley

John Heneghan Hall Hart

Croasdale Chislett

Benicio Richards Curtis

Paton

Before unleashing Stockley in the last half-hour.

I really feel for Tolaj. It’s just a lack of confidence for me, yes he’s got a touch like Uche Ikpeazu at times but that didn’t stop him scoring a couple & bagging about 5 assists earlier in the season. Him & Paton are used to playing as strikers whether that’s a number 9 role or as a pair & hanging them out wide isn’t helping them at all. He will come good again, I’m desperate for the pair of them to score soon! Proper fox in the box but the system Darren Moore plays & very rarely changes regarding the striker situation doesn’t suit him as he’s nowhere near the box. Keep your chin up Lorent all will be well 🇨🇭

Like that team 😍 I’m hoping Byers can come into the fold for this one but do think Chiz & Croasdale works well enough from what we’ve seen so far 👍🏻

Already seem comments from Walsall referring to vale park as 3 points park and we will get our normal 6 points against them. We have lost the last 5 at home to Walsall and have a terrible record against them so I'd already banked on Walsall getting 6 points of us before the season had started. If we get a draw against them then I'd be celebrating it like we have won the world cup as we always lose to them. I'm not massively bothered if we lose top spot come Saturday as I just want a top 3 finish, but you can guarantee there fans will make a big deal over it if they win and go top all over social media.

Avoid defeat and we sit top for another week.

I dont think he will go with a back 4 but i do like that team

From what people have said who have watched their last couple of games they struggle with pace running at them,so personally I dont think this is one for Stockley to start(out of form anyway),i would 100% start Curtis and Paton and as you say the pace and trickery of Richards/BBB could cause issues for them.

I do think Moore will start with Stockley though

This might not be popular but maybe Tolaj needs a loan just to regain his confidence(I still think we will target another striker in the window maybe sending Hackford back)

Not sure that’s the answer. He’s shown what he can do at the start of the season, he’s a class act it’s just not working at the minute for him. I don’t think Paton is too shabby playing wide of a 3 but it certainly doesn’t suit Tolaj at all. Play him up top alongside Stockley or as back up to him when Stockley is tiring or we need a different approach. Just need to find a way get him in the box a bit more mate
