Slow loading and freezing

It's melted again tonight rob.

To be honest,  with the rush of traffic after the cup win, that's no surprise. The server isn't set up to cope with surges I'm afraid.

However, that's not the issue when it slows down during quiet periods.

There seems to be an ongoing problem and so I'm doing a couple of things:

1) As a temporary fix I am refreshing the cache and rebooting the site from time to time.  This does help but is dependent on me having time

2) I'm raising a ticket as we speak to see if the technical guys who run the server can suggest anything else

3) Final thing - if anyone is server-savvy and is happy to take a look at the "back end" (It's not something I am good at) please get in touch. I'd be delighted if anyone more techie could take a look!

However, just to set expectations...

There is a limit on the server capacity and it's not something I can do much about right now. When it is reached during busy times the site will slow down and crash for people. Luckily we're not involved in an exciting cup run or anything... Oh, hold on... so during busy times there will be some loss of performance - it's the crashing during quiet times which is the part that I am working on fixing.

So, bear with me. I am aware of the issues and I am looking to resolve but it's not something I can just flick a switch to resolve and it may take some weeks to get to the bottom of it. So, apologies and bear with me!

Quick update:

1. I've removed a few things (plugins and scripts) which may help with the load.

2. I now have two support tickets in place - one with the people who manage the server and another with the people who created the forum software. Both request they check the settings and come back with any recommendations of any tweaks I need to make.

3. There was also an update of the forum software which I have just initiated (you may have seen the site go down for 10-15 mins) and this may also help

So, cogs are whirling and we'll see what they come back with in terms of helping with this issue...

Please bear with OVF Towers this morning. There's a few things being added/tweaked so there may be the odd error / site offline message as a result. I will confirm when all this is done (and hopefully the site will be running more smoothly then)...

Update:

There have been a couple of changes which are now in place.

I will now leave the site alone to see what difference they make.

The changes are:

1) A change to the PHP (and other technical settings) to increase the amount of "load" allowed on the server. This should help during peak traffic times.

2) A cache added to the forum. To be honest the robf jury is out on this yet. It does seem to make the site lightning fast at times but at other times there's still a significant "wait" until a page opens. I think it needs monitoring to see if it does stop the page crashing etc and perhaps tonight's draw will be a good test of it.

I welcome any feedback on the above. I will post a reminder just before the draw asking for you to report any crashes so keep a look out and do drop a note if there are still issues.

Hopefully we are making progress and things will be a bit better!!!

Thanks,

Rob

I have noticed that when I load the homepage up that new articles aren't showing unless I actually refresh the page. Closing and re-opening the browser doesn't do anything I have to refresh, this is on multiple computers. I thought you hadn't posted for a while and then loads came on at once

That'll be the cache. I have now tweaked it so it doesn't cache the homepage - thanks for passing that on!

Incidentally, how's it going for you all?

My experience was the first couple of pages were slow (but I think that was the cache building up) but now it seems to be much quicker with (touch wood) no crashes but that's just me, I'd be interested to know if that is a similar experience for you...

Got the initial improvement after whatever you did last time Rob but has the slow loading returned for anyone else? All refreshing /reloading for the site  taking >1 minute for me again since yesterday/last night

I am currently testing some caching software so things have been a bit "up" and "down" - the slow loading will probably be the times the cache is switched off. Bear with me on this...

Don’t know if you did your magic Rob but almost as soon as I’d sent the above, things seemed to have improved great.

Just seen your post. Thanks!

There are also some time out issues and at if that occurs the site can go back to being very slow.

I will be speaking to support about these but it won't be today as I am too busy on other things.

I will get on to it but in the meantime pls be patience and I apologise for the up/down speed of the site...

Hmm, an update on this... the cache keeps disconnecting. I have no idea why. I think that's why sometimes it's lightning fast (cache working OK) and then really slow again (cache isn't working).

I have a few other things to do today but I have chased support to see if they can help but as before... bear with me on this issue...
