Adams has said that all 16 will not accept the offer therefore it's an unknown as to how much Micky will have available to build his squad.

 

Also if I was a player at another club who is being courted by teams including the Vale why would I sign for the Vale when actually I may not get a contract until July and then only if KR passes the league test. I think I would be looking elsewhere which is why I think Adams hands are tied at the moment.

 

That's fair enough, i just think he could of afforded to be a little more braver & released 3-4 more, that's just my opinion.

 

What i will say though is if Adams knows all 16 wont sign, he must know which ones? So why offer them a contract in the 1st place? Most players are contracted to the end of June anyway i think? KR will pass the test, that's the easy bit, who doesn't?

Considering we were only 3 points of the playoffs without the deduction, I have one question for those who believe we should demolish the squad.

 

If we'd have been able to keep Chilvers, Madjo and Myrie-Williams, plus bring in Birchall, do you believe they would have been worth more or less than 3 additional points come the end of the season?

 

Madjo couldn't get in the team ahead of pope, and if we'd signed Williams we wouldn't have brought in shuker, so swings and roundabouts really.

As people are saying, this current squad would've got us within 3pts of the playoffs if points weren't deducted.

A new season brings a new beginning so just because we were near the play-offs this year means nothing come the start of next year. It will be the quality of the squad that decides if we will be in the promotion hunt next season so let's hope Micky is right in his decision to keep most of the squad with just a few additions. Otherwise...........

That is a ****** good point! In fact I bet without the particularly bad goalkeeping errors we might have made the play offs even with the 10 point deduction. I'd have kept Martin over Tomlinson but either way we need a new first choice keeper.

Maybe he's just working off the likelihood of some of them not accepting but he'd be happy if they all did? Or maybe he's made relatively low offers to some because he sees them as squad players so doesn't want to consume too much of his budget on them and wouldn't be too concerned if they left?

 

We'll have to see how it pans out but I feel there's a fair risk we'll lose at least Richards and Griff, purely because I think other clubs will want them who may be able to offer them significantly better deals than us, but until that's clear Adams won't know exactly where he needs to strengthen and how many good quality players he'll have to shell out for to improve on this season's team.

 

My own feelings on the squad retention are that a couple of offers have been made to players I really don't think are up to what we need, for example, the unfortunate Haldane and Mr. Muscles Tomlinson.

You can't compare us to Swindon, their wage budget is probably double everyone else's in League Two and way above most in League One.

I would think target should be automatic promotion for anyone associated with the Vale but if you were Adams or Keith Ryder surely you'd want to rein in expectations a little? I think you have to have a massive budget a la Swindon to start talking about winning the league before the season's started.

Is there another league in the world where finishing 7th gives you the opportunity of promotion? I know we would have taken it but it's not a great reflection on your ability in such a poor league, we must aim much higher regardless of budget. Anyone know how Torquay's budget compared to ours?

 

On the topic of goalkeeping, watching the FL show regularly will show how poor the standard is throughout the lower divisions, some great howlers from most teams!!

Its less, but not a great deal, a lottery winner who died and a massive Torquay fan, his wife donated a load of money last year, to build the new main stand and for team building [ Their head steward was talkking to me during the game and we were discussing all things football ]

No, the people that seem to think we can release 10 or so players and rebuild a squad capable of challenging for promotion next season need a reality check. Look no further than Bristol Rovers for an example of what flooding your team with 10 new players can do to you.

 

This group of players got us 1st at Christmas a few years back, if Adams had stayed that season we were certainties for promotion.
