Match Thread - Yeovil Town v Port Vale

Do you really believe we should drop Pope.

He is the only forward on his own and as usual Yeovil put two players on him hoping to stop him scoring.

Luckily we were able to conjure up goals without Pope to the surprise of me and Yeovil.

Manny and Conlon in midfield supported by a reborn Anthony Kay breaking up play ensured we took all 3 points.Kay is far better than Joyce who backs off and can’t tackle.

At least we started well rather than sitting back and soaking up the pressure hoping for a break.

Crazy how different Montano was from Saturday.

No, am not advocating we drop our talisman at all, it is just that we showed last night, we don't have to rely so heavily on what he provides, especially if we play in a similar fashion.

He certainly wasn't being marked by two players last night either, for once they didn't need to as in truth he wasn't in the game that much, and the reason for that was the movement we have been crying out for which, with some ease I have to say, stretched the Yeovil defenders all over the place.

If Popey ever got injured we would all normally fear the worse, myself included, and all I am saying after watching last night, and to be fair the two home checkatrade games, is that with a similar mindset we do now at least have a different way to play, and if nothing else Ernie, it's far easier on the eye as well.

Just an opinion though matey

The same happened in the Walsall checkatrade game too, that first half there I thought was up there with some of the best football we'd played all season. No Pope that night meant no long ball and us building play from the back and down the wings.

I've been saying for weeks that our perceived need to rely on popeys heading ability is contributing to our lack of clear chances. How many other teams would try to build a team and a system of play around a 33yo with no pace or mobility and who's rarely fully fit? That is the exact opposite of what we should be doing. I'm not knocking pope but we really should be trying to develop a system without him. Tuesday showed what can be achieved.

I find it interesting to read comments on opposition forums and media sites.Yeovil press and fans were very honest complimenting the Vale performance, albeit in front of their lowest ever Football League crowd.Good job those brave souls from Vale endured the horrendous journey on a Tuesday night, otherwise it would've been far worse.

Pope was quiet in the air but he was still good with the ball at his feet. The fact that we go long so often annoys me purely because Tom can actually play if we get it into him like that. It's not about playing him or not, it's about having intelligent players around him who don't have to lump it.

Fantastic performance and result. Still think, like others, that centre halves at full back don't work - and won't work - against better teams, but you can't knock anyone after that showing.

What annoys me is why we continual lump high balls to Tom, where he gets barged and pushed without the opposition getting punished. When the ball is played to his feet he has great control and is able to lay off the ball to the runners either side of him. With the ball at his feet if he is barged or pushed then the ref nearly always gives a foul. By all means get some high balls to him in the box where defenders are wary of giving away a penalty. Build up play for me should be to his feet outside the box because he is more effective that way.

We as well of the opposition are by now we’ll aware of Aspins tactic of playing with no wide men and hoof it up to Pope.Maybe Yeovil were caught by surprise that we actually came out to take them on.
