Flashback 10 years

10 years ago yesterday, Vale beat Peterborough United 4-1 to move into 6th in League One (or Division 2 as it was then) thanks to goals from Phil Hardy, Micky Cummins, Steve Brooker and Steve McPhee. This against a Posh side featuring former Stoke players David Oldfield, Richard Forsyth and Jimmy Bullard coming off the bench. That left us in 6th place, one place above Stoke City in the league.

Of course, it didn't last. We went on to finish 14th while Stoke finished 5th, despite losing 1-0 to us at the Britannia. They beat Cardiff over two legs to make the play-off final, where they beat Brentford to go up.

Flash forward 10 years and we're still in 6th, but in the league below. There was also a 4-1 win for one of the Potteries sides but this time it was Stoke, winning 4-1 to make it through to the Europa League group stage for the first time in their history and look forward to possibly facing the likes of PSV Eindhoven, Athletico Madrid, Paris SG, Dynamo Kyiv, Lazio or even Shamrock Rovers! We get the joys of Southend United.

They have their own stadium which they sell out most games. They have a multi-million pound state of the art training field. They have fans who think that signing two England internationals worth millions of pounds on a free transfer isn't good enough. They have an active community scheme and they have a chairman who employs the right staff, makes good business decisions and isn't afraid to dip into his own pocket. All because several years ago they took a risk selling the club to one man.

Then again we once had a one man ownership. We had several promotions. We nearly made the Premier League. We had a man who took advantage of the right manager being in place to lead the club into glory years. Even at our worst point, our debts were lower than they are now.

Still, we are where we are I guess!

we will never match stokes current position

so why worry? with pathetic fickle fans like we have who attack and abuse other vale fans for wanting change we will alas never achieve anything more the lg2 or lg1 football (if we are lucky):(

Correction: We may never match Stoke's current position - but that's no reason not to make the effort.

In February 1995 Wigan played their first match under new owner Dave Whelan. They were a club with no tradition of league football. They were up against one of the most successful Rugby League teams in the country. Wigan lost 4-0 at home to Mansfield in front of a crowd 1,884. That left them 16th in our current division. Ten years later they were in the Premier League and are still there.

In the same season, and before Whelan's arrival, Wigan played a league game at home to Fulham in front of a gate of 1,791. Both are now in the Premier League and Fulham have played in the Europa League final.

Never stop dreaming!

Watched by a crowd of 4925, heading into administration, in a season that ended with Bell out Horton out protests. Happy days. I like to be optimistic, but I think we don't have the potential support, possess a self-destructive streak, and no investor whose been anywhere near VP has the cash of a Whelan or Al-Fayed needed to get in the Prem.
