Jimmy Hill RIP

I'm sad to hear of the passing of Jimmy Hill. A genuine football innovator and I think he was much underrated on MOTD. I remember some very well thought-out comments after our game against Spurs, for instance.

Sad news.

Yes, very sad to lose someone who really knew what he was talking about and combined that knowledge with exceptional presentation and commentary skills. I agree with your comments on his abilities.

Current presenters are not in the same league, and Jimmy Hill will be sadly missed. RIP.

A real gent. I was once running the line in a game when my school team was playing the Corinthian Casuals, and got a mouthful of abuse from their gobby left back when he thought I called it wrong. Given they are meant to play the game in a Corinthian spirit and set an example, I was pretty hacked off to be sworn at in this way, so flagged the ref for verbal abuse. Before the ref had even made it across the pitch to hear my comment, I heard a voice behind me say "Quite right linesman, you shouldn't let him get away with that - he should know better." I turned around to see who had made the comment, and it was Jimmy Hill, who I believe was their Honorary President at the time. I was impressed by his readiness to back me up, but even more impressed that he had come to stand in the mud by the side of the pitch to watch his team play such an inconsequential fixture. He loved football, wanted it played in the right spirit, and would rock up in all weathers for a game. One of my heroes - grew up watching him on MOTD, and feel a genuine sense of someone having been lost that is irreplaceable in the game. Can't think of many of the present crop of players who would put as much back in to the game as he did. RIP Jimmy - a giant of the game, and a lovely bloke.

Another legend gone and real pioneer to our modern game r.i.p to him, he did however campaign successfully to end the idea of a salary cap for footballers which maybe destroyed our chances of ever having a decent England team but never mind!

But we won the World Cup five years after the maximum wage was abolished????
