Chris Ramsey

Just been watching MOTD2 where Chris Ramsey was doing some punditry and it made me think how odd football management can be. He's articulate and has a good analytical brain and obviously understands the game yet he got the sack from QPR when they weren't exactly failing miserably. Steve Clarke has suffered a similar fate at Reading. They are both victims of the unrealistic expectations of their former employers and IMHO have lots to offer, unlike quite a few 'also rans' who seem to constantly gain employment as managers, such as John Sheridan and Ronnie Moore. No doubt the perrenial flop Dean Saunders will be re-employed before long.

I could well be wrong but if I were a club chairman the likes of Ramsey and Clarke would be appealing to me because they seem to be thoughtful and intelligent rather than full of unimaginative cliché ridden drivel.

Just a thought.

Ramsey had one of the highest wage budgets in Championship history, and a bloke who scored 15 goals in the Prem and got an England call up, and took them to the bottom half of the Championship. And people were surprised he got sacked!?

Yeah. I read a couple of the QPR forums from time-to-time and his tactics were slaughtered on there. It's interesting that Neil Warnock (who I don't particularly like) managed to come in and get two wins and a draw (from four games) in his short stay while Ramsey had lost four away games in a row.

I believe most of the QPR fans do think he was a good coach (which backs up SourceoftheTrent's comments that he talks well about the game) but I do feel there is a difference between just being a good coach and a good manager.

That's an absolutely fair comment Rob, but notwithstanding his abilities or otherwise, anyone who has manged in the Premier/Championship, whoever they are, will no doubt have salary expectations far higher than we could ever afford?

It's an interesting debate but I'm not sure being articulate, thoughtful and intelligent necessarily makes you a good football manager the same as if you came over the complete opposite i.e. uneducated, bolshie and generally a not very likeable character. Swings and roundabouts maybe?

Sinnott for us came over as one of the most articulate managers I've heard yet didn't do very well(yet his record in non-league is pretty impressive). I also think Jim Gannon didn't come over too badly in his radio interviews however we all know he was a complete prat and probably one of the worst managers we've had.

Micky Adams you could argue was the opposite maybe not the most articulate or intelligent man but his record as a football manager is pretty good.

I'd imagine it's how you come across and relate to the players in training and in the dressing room. You could be an Oxford Uni graduate or someone with the IQ of some of the people you see on Jeremy Kyle but it doesn't necessarily make you a good or bad manager. Or it could be the complete opposite for being a good coach for example?

And then you have Sam Allardyce...

Heard an interview with him asking about management in general. Interesting insight. Said that you have to make sure that you understand what the chairman/owner/board's expectation are and then detail how you are to achieve it. So if they want to be in the Premiership. You reply, ok - it will take two seasons, £XXXm, and I'll need to build a completely new team. As part of this I want a bonus of £XXm etc... Everything should be in the contract.

A cynic would say that managers know more about football than the board so they can be easily confused in the football details. Managers know this and are nearly always onto a winner either way.

Clarke didn't do himself any favours by going and talking to Fulham about becoming their new manager before changing his mind and deciding to stay at Reading. It probably left the impression that he was just waiting until a better job came along. They then hit a bad run of form and he's now probably wishing he'd gone Fulham.
