Smurthwaite's Interview

He avoided it and said that the Vale might not be a big enough challenge for him. It sounded a lot like damage limitation and that Micky might be off but it's all down to interpretation- I'm not scaremongering

A lot of people have been posting for a while that all was not well between Adams and Smurf, and the likely outcome was Adams will be off. Maybe they were right.

Maths isn't my strong point but if winning today meant 20% of the wage bill getting paid this month that must make the budget over 3 million that cant be right surely?

Probably with office staff included I'd have thought that's about right bd.

Smurf said in the interview that he has a very good relationship with MA. Cullerton & McGarry were sceptical- to the point Cullerton said they should just admit it!

if you go up into the championship the tv revenue alone would put us into profit, crowds would go up again, because success on the field will bring in new fans, the likes of blackpool, wigan, Barnsley and bradford did not have a big fan base when they got into the prem and most have stuck by them since their relegation etc. Build it and they will come!

At the end of the day, he won't dip into his pocket more than he's already doing. The budget was set by others based on over optimistic gate figures. In that sense, his descussions with Adams re signings in Jan will be based on whether a signing would increase the likelihood of covering it's own cost in generating income. The flip side of which is the financial cost of stagnating in a particular position in the league.

Personally, I'd be happy to see us not make signings. Last season, the signings arguably did as much harm to our promotion push as not making them would have. I think the present squad can get to 50 points sooner rather than later, then who knows.

The problem for Smurf is that it's hard to see how to we can increase gates even though we're doing well.

The main message from him is he wants to create a sustainable model ..... Good luck with that, Smurf, it's very very difficult.
