Reserves v Oldham

I was at a bit of a loose end this afternoon and with the match being quite easy to get to on the tram, I thought I'd have a wander over. I'm sure Jordan Hugill got the second instead of Taylor and Dell got the fourth. Unless Hugill is black but I'm pretty sure he isn't. He does have big shoulders like the Honey Monster.

I decided to write a match report because since I became unemployed I need to find things to do to fill the day.

===================

Rob Taylor continued his Port Vale comeback with a goal for the reserves a comfortable 4-1 win at Oldham.

The left-winger, who has been sidelined since March with an Achilles injury, played 70 minutes in a strong Vale side, which also featured Adam Yates, Chris Shuker, Chris Lines, Gavin Tomlin, Chris Birchall and Joe Davis.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was amongst the spectators at Oldham’s Chapel Road training ground. His son Anton was part of a Latics line-up which also included striker Charlie McDonald and experienced goalkeeper Paul Rachubka.

There was an anxious moment midway through the first half when Taylor challenged for a 50-50 ball and stayed down, but after receiving treatment he was OK to continue. And a minute later it was Taylor who should have opened the scoring when he brought a ball over the top of the Oldham defence under control, but with only Rachubka to beat he somehow managed to lift the ball over the bar.

Vale were having the better chances in an even first half, but were fortunate when the referee waved away strong penalty appeals from the home side. Jonson Clarke-Harris got the better of Adam Yates and appeared to have been brought down by Sam Johnson as the left winger pushed the ball past the Vale keeper. A minute later Vale had a good penalty shout of their own as Tomlin appeared to be shoved in the back by an Oldham defender when through on goal.

It was Tomlin though who eventually opened the scoring in the last minute of the first half, rolling the ball home from two yards out after Chris Birchall cut the ball back from the byline.

Shortly after the restart Vale doubled their lead when Jordan Hugill showed good strength and control to collect a return pass before lifting the ball over the advancing Rachubka and into the net.

The game was becoming stretched and Vale extended their lead on the counter attack. Shuker worked the ball wide to Rob Taylor in space on the left wing, who ran through on goal before coolly rolling the ball past the goalkeeper.

Substitute Jordan Bove pulled a goal back for Oldham before Dominic Dell, on as a substitute for Taylor, rounded off the scoring when a quick free kick found him in space on the left. He cut inside and unleashed a right footed shot across goal which flew into the bottom corner.

Vale: Johnson; Yates, Price, Davis, Jefford; Shuker, Birchall, Lines, Taylor; Tomlin, Hugill.

Good to hear Rob Taylor played OK, I know most will say he's had his chance but he was one of our better players in the bad times under Sinnott, Glover and V2001 and I always think considering where we had him from he hasn't been a bad player for the club.

Did any of the development players look like they could make the breakthrough at some point?
