Alternative league table

dun 4

Recommended Posts

Over the last 8 seasons, the range of points for automatic promotion in third place has been 78 - 88, with the average just over 82 points (82.25 to be exact). So it's likely, though not certain, that 84 points will be more than enough.

Interestingly, over the same time period, the gap between top and fourth place has never been more than 5 points at this stage of the season, whereas now the gap is 10 points. The one season when it was 5 points was 2004-05 when the top three at the time all went up because the chasing pack couldn't close the gap. So we're in a strong position.

No room for complacency though - as they say in the stock market, past performance is no guide to the future. What we need to do is focus on our own games, forget about the chasing pack (apart from when we play them!) and let them worry about us.

let's crudely assume that vale maintain the current season's form of approx 2 points per game if they play well = 30 points therefore totaling 90 points which will have to be promotion 1st or second. If they waiver a bit they should still achieve 25 points = 85 which should still hopefully equate to 1st, 2nd or 3rd....so the bottom line is more of the same please Vale (and we promise not to panic or start protests if we lose one or two)

Here's the top 10 in league 2 according to the total number of points they can possibly make if they win every remaining game.

Vale 105

Gilingham 104

Rotherham 97

Fleetwood 95

Cheltenham 94

Exeter 94

Northampton 93

Southend 92

Burton 92

Bradford 92

There's no chance anyteam other than Vale will win every game and anyway there are still quite a number of top ten clashes so points will be dropped. Its easy to keep this table as the season goes on, just deduct 2 points for every draw and 3 for a defeat. You can see Vale are 10 points ahead of 4th place and 13 ahead of 8th.

No chance we'll win every game!!!

I have looked at these alternative leagues and thought what if.....

5 points for a win were awarded

3 points for a draw

0 points for losing.

Vale would still be top of the league and Gillingham would be second.

I find this amazing!

( are there any statistitians out there who can prove we are not top of the league?)

Again what does that show? Nothing. Of course we will still be top, it shows nothing.

But what if points won were replicated by Caramacs that could be handed out to all under 8's before every home game ie, 67 points matched by the Caramacs = 67 really happy kids. We would still be top of the league and kids from Wimbledon would be fighting over very few fawn coloured treats. Unfotunately Gillingham would still be second, however they are slightly more health conscious in the South East and may put a ban on such a scheme. If Vale keep winning, Jamie Oliver may well do a new documentary bemoaning the fat kids of Burslem.

Its that Mickey Adams he's a culinary Nick O'Teen!
