Well duffys was 100% handball and a booking.... In my opinion It wasnt a peno, every team adds at least 4 mins on when losing at home.

I'm no statto but didnt we win our 2 games 4-0 at home and 3-1 away. hardly relgation form.

 

What happened yesterday is whats known as football. It happens and a couple of years ago when we did similar to Huddersfield.

 

What it did prove to me yesterday is that we aren't too far away from that standard.

I saw it all the way the original poster saw it, minority of two maybe.

Playing with two wide men leaves massive spaces in the central midfield. Couple that with not having a defensive midfielder who can sit in front of the back two (ala Griffthis) and mop things up, we are always going to be vulnerable.

 

Yesterday, bringing Dodds on for Williamson to make up a three man midfield might have done the trick, allowing James to drop back a bit.

 

4-4-2 to start with and 4-5-1 to finish with might be the way forward in tight games.

Unbelievable Geoff! Can't believe Port Vale fans, they're second in the league by some distance, score goals for fun, have the top scorer in the leagues with probably the world's highest conversion rate, and they STILL MOAN.

I'm not moaning, and I don't think many others are either. It was a genuine question, why can't we hold on to leads, thus prompting a discussion about tactics.

 

Now, isn't that what a fan forum is about.

aspins - of course it is and after all the off the field stuff we have had to put up with its great having a 'different' sort of disagreement, long may it continue as you say its what the forum is for.

 

IMHO We can't hold onto a lead because we can't defend (seems to be what comes out of the club) - we could take a forward (Williamson ) off and put another in midfield - or remove a winger for a midfielder. Which is what I thought he intended yesterday with the Dodds switch i.e. a right midfield role with an attacking intention.

 

I think both his substitutes were designed to get the ball to stick upfield a bit more (and alieviate the pressure that way) but lets be fair to Sheff Utd they created the pressure on us because they upped their game and I think we were pushed back more than deliberately falling back.

We used to be able to be impregnable because we had Griff sitting in front of the back four and no wingers.

 

The team dynamic and style has changed which leaves the back 4 more exposed, sacrificed for more goals if you like. The real issue isn't the back 4 though, it's central midfield. This isn't a criticism its an observation. The lack of a proper holding defensive midfielder means that we tend to surrender territory rather than protect it.

All of our wins, or even draws, have not come as a result of sparkling flowing football.
