Sheff Utd 2 - Vale 1 Post Match Comments

Just got back and thought I'd log on and see the messages of praise for an outstanding performance.

I've given up reading half way through this thread some of you on here are beyond belief.

We have just got within one crap refereeing decision of beating Sheff Utd on their own pitch - now let me think how many games have they lost at home this season?

Duffy got booked for the ball hitting his arm when he went in for a challenge - 10 minutes from the end their defender did exactly the same to Popeys shot and it should have been given as a penalty but the ref bottled it.

Pope got put into touch around that time and their player should have been booked - not even a foul given.

The ball goes out for a goal kick and like Jean says all their players head for the half way line to see the ref and his linesman giving a corner - the only two in the ground who thought it was and they scored from the resulting attack.

We got to within 4 or 5 minutes of knocking them out of the cup and a load of you are ****** moaning we didnt do this we didnt do that, so and so was crap - NO-ONE WAS CRAP AND EACH AND EVERY PLAYER GAVE HIS ALL it wasn't quite enough simply because of a crap refereeing decision, but at least give them the credit they deserve.

What he said.

As good a summing up as you are likely to get..................

Hi Alan,

Yes it was a great day, just like the old times wasnt it - thought the fans were magnificent at the end singing 'we're going up' - I think the players really appreciated that because they were devastated at the end.

Dave

I think that we were all searching for someone to blame at the end. Gutted. But how could we have ever dreamed that we could have had a day like this a few months ago?

Onwards and upwards.

The best bit of the day was seeing Smurf dancing in the stand with his Vale scarf on.

First half both teams tried, without much effect but Vale, as the away side aganst higher league opposition certainly had the greater share of the half and deservedly took the lead. Backed by a Magnificent support Vale had taken the game to Sheffield who seemed lethargic and somewhat surprised at our effort.

Second Half it was obvious they would change things and sure enough, they started to use the width of the park, and virtually attacking at will.

It's easy to say Vale 'sat back' but in reality, we were being pushed back. The Vale wingers were virtually starved of the ball and we just couldn't keep the ball long enough to relieve the pressure.

It was odds-on they were going to score but when they missed a header from 2 yards it looked like we may just be on for the win but in reality, our second half performance was not good enough to warrant a win.

Having said that, the ref didn't give us anything second half and denied us what looked to me a clear case of handball in the area by their defender late on - and don't get me started on their 'corner'.

For me, given that we have only just exited a very long and harduous administration, with a threadbare 4th division set of players, we accredited ourselves extremely well and should feel very proud that we took them all the way. Where the ref got 4 minutes from I don't know and I was disgusted with their No5 after the second goal keeping the ball then kicking it away when Duffy ran 30 yards to retrieve it for the restart.

Terrible home support considering it was a tenner to get in, they only sung after the equaliser and I truly hope they get a horrible away tie in the next round but given our/their luck they will probably get Man U at home.

Well, absolutely spot on for me. At half time I thought Utd couldn't play as badly as they had in the first half and so it proved. We didn't so much as sit deep as were forced back and the pressure eventually told, aided and abetted by another cretinous ref. Four bookings for us and one for them, and that right at the end - complete joke. Plus free kick after free kick raining down on our defence meant that we had to crack at some point. But where the officials got four minutes from at the end I'll never know (BTW, BBC says he played 7, long enough to make sure they had every opportunity to score). The spontaneous chants of cheat echoing in his ears at the end said it all for me.

Having said that, the game illustrated that we are still not strong enough in midfield despite the best efforts of Burge (who I thought played very well) and James (who's not as effective as either Loft or Morsy). Micky seems to like and dislike James and Morsy in equal measure and I think it will be a long time, if ever, that we see Morsy back in the side. Hope I'm wrong.

Terrible result but on reflection enough positives to give us some comfort. Loved it at the end when the Vale fans chanted "we are going up" to the players when they came over - just what they needed. Let's hope we're right.

And as for the pathetic, insipid Blades fans, on that showing, I think they well may be seeing us again next season because they looked anything but a promotion side.

3 poor erfomances today for me. First and foremaost South Yorkshire police. We get to sheffield (i drove) and drive around for ages trying to find a place to park. Stuck in traffic, I asked a policeman in his own car where is best to park, he asked where I was from when we said stoke he coems out with "oh yeah its the cup game today aint it" how did they not all know. He did slightly redeem himself though and said " I hope you s**t all over then" but he had no clue where we could park.

The refere, few odd decisions, he gave a throw to them when the liner did not even flag it as out, I lost count how many times they were all over pope pulling pushing 2 on one and we got nothing. Booking our player, i forget which for the ball hitting his hand as he slid in, never a booking, but then doing nothing with any of there players for much worse. How pope did not get a freekick when he landed on the liner I will never know. How the hell was the corner given at the end it clearly came off there head. The a ridiculous amount of injury time even over the time he decided on. I expected him to red card Dodds at the end too for the push and at least book their player for holding on to the ball, but nothing (thankfully for dodds)

JMW, where the hell was he? He just never turned up. Saw him get a rollocking from MA in first half then he stropped off like a little boy with a tantrum. Apart from a couple of blocks he just could not be bothered. Even shouted at James I think for not playing a pass, but he missed th pass because he was shouting (u know what i mean). Big fan of JMW don't get me wrong but it does have a bad game he is awful .

The police again after the game, now not condoning the violence after the game, but surely if our buses are parked outside one of their main entrances, what do they expect. It was always going to happen given he nature of the result. Just seemsed of there was one bloke goading the police going at them then running off a few times and they just stood there, there was a scufle a bit further up the road between a couple of fans at first then a few more then right next to us, a copper battons a woman who was just in the wrong place. Absolut disgrace. Then to top it off no traffic control at all geting out of the the area.
