Beckford was one of the greats, and his "hang time" was the stuff of legend.  Maybe I'm mis-remembering, but I seem to recall Pope scoring a lot of headers with his feet still on the ground, or diving so that his head was below 6ft at the time it met the ball.

Pope was an immensely strong man and gave 100% every game. At his best he just bullied centrehalves.  First spell he was better than that and ran the channels well.

So we've ascertained Pope was good and he was strong.

Any new signings?

Robbie Earle was a good header of the ball and scored quite a few alongside Mr Beckford

Beckford,  Earle and Sproson weren't the biggest. They were all good headers of the ball. Without a doubt the best corner routine of the last 54 years. Teams knew what was coming and we still scored a hatfull of goals.

I think some are taking the thread off topic again,I think(might be wrong) that there is a separate thread on past players?

So back on track all these young lads moving is in a way a great thing for the club and it's future

We have the potential of N'dala moving from Man City,Lawrie has gone to Man City,we have Dipepa at Southampton,Mills at Newcastle Utd and there could be really young ones who have moved to Premier clubs that we are unaware of right now like when N'dala moved at the age of 11 or 12.

Add to this that the likes of Shorrock,Walters and Agnero all being watched and you would think that others in the Academy are also being looked at with how our reputation is right now

I know that he's not done his reputation much good since he "left", but Pope was probably the best header of a ball that I've seen in a Vale shirt, even after he lost the ability to jump.  I am part of the post Ernie Moss era though.

There's only one candidate for me -

I suspect this thread is probably redundant until the unofficial loan window opens early August 🤔

The problem is it involves players most of us have never seen or heard of when it becomes relevant again!

How do they do that?

It defies the laws of physics ... 🙂

He was certainly ‘up there’ with the best of them😉

You're a lucky man as I never saw him play. I got invited into the changing room after matches by him when I was 5 or 6 and all the players were in the communal bath. I was even allowed to swim in it! By then he was just the manager.  Seemed a nice guy to a 5 or 6 year old.

And you proper cried at me for bringing up vales current financials in a response to someone else! Good lord this forum 🤦🤦🤦

All gone a bit quiet on the transfer front hasn't it. I'm expecting (and hoping) at least a couple more in, not counting any loans. I still think our defence needs work and we badly need another proven striker at the level. Could be the difference between struggling and a comfortable mid table finish.
