Transfer Rumours Pre-Season

I don't understand why people want to bring up his loan spell five years ago.

For me, five years in football is an age ago. He was out of form, needed some games to get match fit and was clearly unhappy at Motherwell when he joined us last. He hadn't played in Scotland for a month and joined a side that had only scored four goals in 2016 and were badly out of form as well. That's often the case with loan players - they need half a dozen games to just get up to speed - that's precisely why their parent clubs loan them out to get match fit.

It's totally different now - he's got five years more experience including 50 games in this division, he reached double figures last season at Colchester, he's joining a side with wingers who should provide plenty of chances, a positive atmosphere with good owners and in a lower division than when he first joined us

Personally, I don't think his previous spell when he was clearly struggling with no match fitness has any relevance on what he can do this season. I hope people give him a clean slate and wait to see a few appearances in his second spell before passing judgement.

Add to that the fact that he joined a squad who had been told they would be ripped apart by a fool of a chairman who fed players left over, out of date pies.

Moral was down, confidence was down, professionalism around the place was down... A fish rots from the head and the place stunk to high heaven.

It was 5 years ago, but the difference is so so sooo much bigger than just that time scale.

New team, new world, new approach.... new player... lets wait and see!

Interestingly, I would have expected to see Maynard announced at Mansfield today... is there any news on that front?

Or is he, or his agent, turning the screw one more time to get every last drop of cash?

Or now that the next highest contender are out of the picture Mansfield have reduced their offer

His time wasting may have shot him in the foot.

There is an interesting interview with Holloway on Unofficial Vale. They were due to sign Robinson (allegedy) but he joined us because we did not have a covid clause in out contract offer. The official Grimsby view is we are made for not having one.

Would think a fit Cullen would be the first choice striker and Pope would be a super sub warm up around the hour mark and go mad and run around like a 27 year old for the last 20 minutes while Robinson can play down the middle or either side of the front three....

Thinking about that Askey 4/3/3 then in Worral and Amoo and Browne and Montano we have a quality set of wingers and in Pope and Cullen and Robinson three proven experienced goalscorers for that central striker role.....Cullen is quality if fit and to have Pope and Robinson as back up.....that magnificent seven in rotation for the front three is particularly strong....then there is young Rodney and Hurst.

Final thought on the Robinson signing (and by the looks of it Visser will be the keeper) instead of the far more expensive Maynard is there enough budget still outstanding then for a left back hopefully because the squad looks well balanced all over exept at left back perhaps.

There are no plans to sign a leftback. I think any excess money will be kept for January unless we get a serious injury in the next few weeks.

So it looks like Montano at left back and Crooke as cover while Mills can play both sides.....hasn't Hurst also played left back/left midfield/left wing and perhaps our only dedicated specialist left back young Cambell-Gordon.

Just watched the Robinson 2019/2020 Colchester highlights and the lad has pace to burn and is sharp around the box but also some good finishes and assists seems a team player...International caps for Jamaica has mostly played higher and looks a level above in league 2....could prove a canny signing.

All in all with Robinson and Amoo and Montano and Rodney got some genuine pace in behind in the squad against a high line.

Charlie Adam on trial at Bolton.

Bolton certainly looking to throw cash about. I believe they've made fifteen signings so far which includes goal scorer Doyle.

That could be a disaster. Seems they haven't learnt.

Didn’t take long for us to sign a left back then 😀
