Aspin is taking Vale in right direction but he is no miracle worker

However, surely you're allowed to question how well he's doing?

Nowhere in the article does it says Aspin is infallible (the very title suggests exactly the opposite). What it is hopefully pointing out is some unrealistic expectations that I have read in various places.

I think in the circumstances he has done well. The crucial words there being - "in the circumstances". I don't quite see why some people think a side in the bottom third of League Two will attract some of the names some want to sign. Most good players are tied to contracts - what we have gone for is non-league potential plus whatever loanees we can get while letting some players go. I don't think realistically (again, the key word) we could have hoped for more.

Yes, the current form is terrible but with two home games to come there are chances to arrest that.

BTW, to answer a previous comment. The point about Vale being safe isn't meant to be statistically true, it's my personal opinion (as is the whole of the article) that we are safe or will be safe under the current manager.

A club is only as good as the players on the field, we no longer have a team that finished in a mid table position in L1. We have a team capable of finishing mid table L2 if they perform consistently, but too many young ones and old legs to make it as simple as that. 18 would be a good spot.

I completely agree with the points over us being too big for league 2 but I think Aspo has made the football better to watch after a dire start.

I am not sold on his idea of bringing in non league rough diamonds in the hope of them coming good. Sounds rather similar to the barking scheme to bring in a few foreign lads and hope they would be good.

Regis, his first effort is turning into a wrong un, while all the others are unlikely to be first team starters, when we needed better players than what we have, not back ups to the existing duffers.

I also think this misguided view that Aspo was a great player means he will be a great manager. With all due respect Michael Brown had an even better career in the top flight and won the FA Cup. He was unfortunately rubbish, despite being an equally dedicated pro as Aspo had been.

Unfortunately I don’t think either managers are poor. Even Bruno wasn’t a total duffer, getting us up the league with a team who had never played in it early on. Page was very good looking back.

The common denominator of delivering failure is the one man failure specialist Norman Smurfwaite. The man who never fails never to back a manager and hopes we can get by in scrounging freebies and loans from other clubs. He accept any old rubbish as long as it is cheap. He has sanctioned all these cheapo non league buys and loans, but Aspo tried to keep Gunning, an average player on little money and Smurf ultimately reckoned he wants too much....except mighty Forest Green Rovers don’t think so.

For a man who wants to sell the club, he seems to be doing little to make it look like an appealing saleable object.

I wasn't as keen on Aspin's appointment as most as I felt without his legendary playing career at Vale, for me his record at management was just average. I thought it was an appointment by Smurfwaite at appease the majority and buy time for himself (Which I still believe) But I'm ecstatic to say that I was wrong over Aspin. He's installed a desire and fighting spirit long since lost with the these players and given time and resources, we are clearly on the right path. But there is still a belief with some that he can do no wrong and is above criticism. After the Luton game, he was lauded over but the Yeovil performance was the player's fault. Saturday saw Pugh beaten time and time again but nothing was done to change that. We have League Two players and they will make mistakes but so will the manager.

This idea that brown built a good side but couldn’t manage them is nonsense. Aspin just worked wonders with them and now peoples expectations have grown possibly a bit much. I said when he arrived that survival by goal difference would be a success as we were so bad. Brown failed in the goalkeeper department, failed in the fullbacks department, managed with the centre halves because he signed so many of them, failed with the centre mid department, managed with the wingers because he signed so many, and mis managed pope, but again ultimately failed because if pope is injured the other strikers are not good enough.

Playing devil's advocate for a moment...

He hasn't taken us to safety yet as there's still almost half a season to go. He's taken an established League One club half a dozen places up League Two whilst struggling to beat some quite poor sides. I loved Neil as a player and really want him and Rudgie to succeed but I think all this 'In Aspin We Trust' stuff is a bit daft. I don't actually think the squad Brown assembled was too bad (with a couple of exceptions) - after all, it was largely Brown players that beat Luton - it's just his management was so dire that those players looked Sunday league at best. I actually think we should be higher in the league.

*dons helmet*

What's with the "established league one club"

Did I miss something as I thought we are a struggling - mid table at best, league two club.
