Half of the fun of football on these shores is the rivalry between clubs. It can be just something that has happened between two clubs previously (Vale v Wrexham was tasty in the 60’s & 70’s). With a European League, most clubs would have NO history whatsoever, this making future games less than appetising. It may happen, but I don’t see it being a success.

I agree with what you posted about local rivalries, but there are also longer distance ones such as Real Madrid and Barcelona, Leeds and Manchester United, and sometimes cross-border.

Most Dutch clubs have a special dislike of West German clubs that mirrors their national team, sometimes there are alliances between teams a long way apart, like Rangers and Chelsea.

Even in Vale's case, going back a few years Walsall were always more of an 'enemy' than Crewe despite them being a bit further away.

To have rivalry there has to be “history” between the two clubs involved. Our rivalry with Walsall was down to the fact that we never beat them. Therefore you looked forward to the next time we met to put the record straight. But with a European League, the meetings between the two clubs involved will be limited, so the game will not have that “edge” Football has to have that edge to make it exciting and it’s excitement that draws the crowd in. If this is lacking, it may well be a decent game but not exciting. But no doubt time will tell.

It's an interesting one - but look at the rivalry and feeling between say, England and Germany or Holland and Argentina. That does prove your point about it being based on history, but also there is no local derby element.

After the end of WW2 the Dutch were left starving. The German's buggered off back home on stolen Dutch bikes. Do not steal a Dutchman's bike. That is why the Dutch dislike the Germans so much and why you see "waar is Oma's fiets" banners. Where is Gran's bike? On display. The Dutch really hate the Germans. Don't get it personally, but there you go.

Must be a thing about WW2 and bicycles. The Japanese took Singapore by attacking the British through what was thought impenetrable jungle on bicycles. Not that the loss of the British jewel in their Far Eastern Crown had anything to do with the sheer incompetence of Raffles Socialite and Army leader Lieutenant General Arthur Percival of course.

they don't hate the huns as much as the greeks do,during the war they shot locals for gathering sea salt and stole all the available food out of the shops shooting any locals who objected and contrary to popular opinion the greeks don't hate the turks they despise them.

Too true. Greeks and Turks do not get on. As I have posted on a previous thread, my Cypriot aunts family lost their home following the annexation of the island following the Turkish invasion in ‘74. Even now, some 43 years later, you mention Turks at your peril.
