There's a good article in the Sunday Express on Andy Shankland and his problems since having to quit the game at 22 years old. Not many people havered suffered the bad luck he has had all his life, yet he still seems cheerful and has no regrets.

The game that sticks out for me was a league cup first round match at Wrexham when we won 5-1 ( i think ) and he had an absolute stormer !!! We drew Man Utd in the next round...

Oh a i got struck on the head from a Tommy Gore shot during the warm up... I've still got a headache !!!!!

Reading about Andy's plight makes you realise how much the game has changed since he was a player. A prosthetic limb costs what a average championship player will earn in a week and thats why the current game has lost all sense of reality.

When you look at what Andy has gone through and still kept his sense of humour and you look at todays "prima donnas" who park their £60,000 luxury sports car and "forget" about it.......... well, I know who I have more respect for.

He did score on his debut, but it was against Tranmere.

The Tranmere League Cup match on 28th October 1981 was Shankland's first Vale game. Vale lost 2-1 and Neville Chamberlain scored.

Three days later, Shankland made his league debut against Hull and scored the first goal in a 2-1 win.

I knew I was right!:D

Almost thirty years ago though was it! Crikey I remember it well, a cracking half volley from about 25 or more yards into the Bycars net.======

It would have been great if Vale had held his benefit dinner on the 30th anniversary of his debut rather than the November date. The 28th is a Friday night as well, so more fun could be had by all attending.
