So... this weekend the A League will introduce the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) so it will be very interesting how much it is used.

I was at a trial game a few months back where a defender running into the box behind the ref was tripped, the ball went out for the corner and he reviewed the video and awarded the penalty. It was the only time in the game it was used so didn't slow the game down much actually.

Will reserve my judgement until after the next 2 games.

My thinking Conrad is the VAR should have been introduced at the beginning of the season - not the sharp end of it

For every penalty I have seen this season either live or on TV, players have encroached before the ball was struck. I have not seen one retake ordered by a referee. They just seem to ignore this rule.

They ignore a lot of rules.

Shawcross was rightly penalised for grappling/ wrestling in August, likewise a Palace player. Since then it has died a death, Taylor last week for Wimbledon was doing it all game off corners and never even spoken to.

Reffing is at an all time low it appears, or is it in our heads due to the fact everything is so scrutinised these days.

I wouldn't say an all time low, it's not great but I think it's rare that it ruins a game (some said the ref ruined Tuesday, yes he made a few bizarre decisions but the penalty & red were correct, which I only agreed with after watching the highlights back, but not at the time).

The controversy is a great talking point in football, whether it be watching your own team, or discussing events that happened in another on TV/elsewhere. We complain a lot about refereeing, but I think most fans are biased towards their team, especially during the game (I believe making a lot of noise does impact the ref's decisions at times).

The thing that annoys me is the inconsistency, how rules like this are pretty much ignored, or foul throws are rarely given etc. Also, how many second penalties would actually be awarded if the referee had the guts, or the amount of red cards shown for second fouls after a player has already been booked, but instead they always end up with a warning? Irritating how some fail to make the big decisions for fear of being called biased.
