Lets hope they go for dean saunders he did well for chesterfield.

Too right!

Saunders is one of those managers who amazingly gets employment. He's got a hopeless record and he's so vague when he's interviewed it's like he's been drinking heavily or been munching space cakes. Why on earth anyone would think 'I need a manager, I know, Dean Saunders, he's the best man for the job...' is beyond me.

However, Dean Smith has seriously impressed me at Walsall. They're a club I can't stand (it's a thing from my youth, many Vale fans share it) but I have to grudgingly admit he's made a silk purse from a sow's ear there and performed very well on a limited budget that also involved him having to replace his better players as they moved on.

I share your grudging admiration for Dean Smith but you are right about Walsall. The worst of it was going to Vale Park on a freezing Boxing Day to watch them beat us at home 1-2 with ten men and a fabulous winning goal from John Woodward. We had the last laugh though as we signed Woodward and he went on to score 30 goals in 99 games for us - much better than his ratio at the Saddlers. They still get under my skin though, can't stand them!

Good manager Dean Smith. I remember seeing John Woodward firing an absolute rocket that hit the underside of the bar, and flew into the back of the net against Blackburn . We lost 2-1 at home, but that goal always stays with me , because it's the first goal that I saw Vale score , and my first time seeing them at home. Anyway, sorry it's off-topic, but you brought me back to that night in the 70's.

Sean, was that the time you crossed the water and stayed with 2 lovely people in Sneyd Green?

My memories of Walsall are mainly positive, in fact the very first game I saw between our 'Clubs was a reserves match at the Old Rec when our goalkeeper was non other than Ray King (R.I.P).
