Froch v Groves!

Body shots by Froch changed the fight, great right hand to finish it. Why do some boxers fight with their right hand at waist level, asking for trouble especially during an exchange as happened tonight.

Talk about a rematch with Andre Ward or a fight with GGG, if I were Froch I'd stay away from both these guys and go for Julio Chavez Jr at Wembley.

I meant left hand bozo.

Hi, Paul.

The theory is that the shoulder can protect the left side of the chin, and the jab can be both faster (because the arm's relaxed) and sneakier (because it seems to come from nowhere). Kronk gym (Detroit) fighters, for example, were well-known for this, in the 1990s.

Carl Froch has often exasperated his backers, though, because the shoulder's too low and the chin's up! But it usually works for him....

He'd like to fight in Las Vegas, but I think your suggestion for him (Chavez) is a good one. I'd like to see him retire, though; with his style he's taken more than enough big shots, and his legacy (for me) is solid and admirable.

Yes you're right, the same reasoning is given by the likes of Teddy Atlas and Roy Jones. However from my perspective if I was a boxer (and I'm not that brave or talented) I would employ the Mayweather approach, chin tucked in behind the left shoulder and the left arm higher than waist level, gives more defense from looping right hands and in open exchanges provides more protection.

I would like to see Froch go out on top but if he wants another big pay day then Chavez Jr at Wembley in front of 80k partisan supporters together with world wide PPV revenues would be ideal, different kettle of fish with Chavez Jr in Vegas where the crowd would be mainly Mexican and hostile. Also, I believe Froch has never lost on English soil.

He seems to have to commit to a mandatory challenger for his IBF belt in the next 12 weeks. That could mean facing a dangerous opponent that doesn't maximise his earning potential. So he will need to decide how to manage the risks and opportunities in the time in his career he has left and in particular he is always in the last chance saloon now. He certainly lumped Groves though and so he is probably good for a few detentions yet.
