I'm in favour of the death penalty in all circumstances!

it will guarantee that they won't do it again

Empty the prisons, save the money wasted, spend it on medical research, looking after our old people properly, proper border controls,

free nursery care, free university education (for the talented youngsters) etc etc

Good heavens! How many people are you expecting to hang each year to pay for that lot?? Be sure I won't be riding me bike without lights with you around.

Its being reported this person was a high achieving student who was fed up of the grief his teacher was giving him, if this turns out to be as reported then surely the death penalty would be justified otherwise people could kill others on the street for throwing litter etc. There has to be hardline punishments to deter people from doing things like this.

'More casual' is a very menial way of putting it.

The death penalty is not a deterrent... most murders are either planned or spur of the moment... if its planned part of the plan wont be getting caught so any punishments wont be a deterrent... if its spur of the moment it wont even be considered before the act.

As a punishment its final... I dont really have a problem with that provided that if the executed is proven later to be innocent, the jury, judge, prosecutors and police involved are hanged for killing the wrong person.

It should only be for those cases beyond all doubt, this atrocity was witnessed by many so there is little or no chance of that.

RIP, a terrbile loss to her family and friends I'm sure.

Legislation has to change and become far, far tougher. Life should mean life for terrible crimes such as this and maybe even going as far as the death penalty as a deterrant. At the moment this disgusting human being knows they will be out within 5-8 years and will probably be hero worshipped by and ever growing extremist group. Second chances will be quoted but that teacher will never have a second chance, neither will her loved ones, imagine your mother, sister or daughter going out to do a job and not coming back tonight...

Society has created situations like this simply accepting gradual deterioration in standards of behaviour and value of other peoples thoughts and feelings, its time we stood up and told the world behaviour like this will make you an outcast forever.

It is certainly a crime with terrible consequences but is it a terrible crime?

You jump to assume very quickly.

Where is the gradual deterioration?

So if found guilty what punishment and privileges would you think he should receive?

I've no issue with life sentences, hard labour, bread and water, solitary confinement etc. Don't confuse being against the death penalty with being soft on crime and criminals

That's not feasible cos it will have been the system that got it wrong not the people..for example you can't blame the jury if the evidence was compelling yet subsequently proven to have been incorrect.

One issue with juries is that they are less likely to return a guilty verdict if they know that the accused would face the death penalty..and you can't excuse people from jury duty just cos they are against the death penalty

I'm not, I'm asking.

In terms of murder for me so long as life meant life, they get not benefits, lose all of their human rights, no tv, video games etc, they eat slop and they are kept in solitary confinement 23.5 hours a day with only 4 walls for company that would suffice.

There is and always will be doubt... the jury thought there was no doubt in the derek bentley case... they thought the same about timothy evens.

What happened at Belsen, Dachau, Treblinka, Sobibór, Auschwitz Majdanek etc were atrocities... albert fish committed atrocities, children tortured, killed, dismembered and eaten... as tragic as this incident is it isnt atrocious.
