Hamil End, 1960s

Anybody remember that big geezer in glasses and a grey/green raincoat who used to sit on the mound behind the Hamil End terracing, during the 1960s, generally complaining, whatever the scoreline?

Somebody shouted up to him one day, pointing out that what he shouted had nothing to do with what was going on in the game. His reply (I kid you not) was:

Boatload o' salt water an' 'alf a pig!'

His opponent came up with no response; and I certainly couldn't have thought of one...

I used to be on the mound by the old scoreboard with mates - I was only in my early teens mind you and can only remember the excitement of waiting for the guy with the half time scores to make his way from the Nobel, climb he ladders to the scoreboard, then start dropping the scores in Der each letter.

Particularly when he wouldd get it wrong and drop a high number in, then look over to check what he had put, then pull it t and replace with a zero.

Does anyone know where there's a picture of the old scoreboard so we can show younger fans t we are talking about?

I remember my dad slapping a scoucer across the face for swearing in front of me on the Hamil End at the end of that great FA Cup night in 1964, the scoucer was shocked and just walked away ashamed. How times have changed.

Can't remember the big geezer but then again when I stood at the top of the Hamil end I could hardly see the pitch, the Hamil end was massive and freezing most of the time.

Tony Loska came on at 4-2 down and played like a left winger ....think he scored one and crossed one for Sammy Morgan to head in? I went out with his sister, Janet, for years and often talked to him about Vale days.....following home game, or was it the preceding one we beat York 4-3.....remember me old man saying...****** hell 15 goals in from2 home games...that's a season's woth !
