As our Coach left today's in convoy on the Sheffield Parkway a car load of Vale fans were hanging out of the windows with Vale flag and beer cans on show.......We joined the M1 at J33 and we were passed by 3 police cars with their 'blues and two's' blasting.......I said to our driver lets hope there has not an accident as the Chopper was flying above us.......BUT no it was South Yorkshire finest in pursuit of the said Car........They hemmed then in by the services.....Total over reaction and a very expensive one IMHO......

DRINKS IN WITS OUT. their own fault, crass idiocy, talk about asking to be pulled, no sympathy i'm afraid. Don't drink and drive and even if you aren't don't make it look as though you are so doing, common sense required here.

Unnecessary criticisms of the Police once again. I saw these idiots and they deserved to be followed and stopped so someone innocent didn't get hurt on a busy motorway!

Spot on Matt, had the police done nothing THEN is the time to criticise, when dead bodies and twisted metal are all over the motorway and not when they are doing their job correctly. If you think about it, lets say this car had coursed a serious accident then do you think one police car could have delt with the situation and stopped it becoming a major incident.

Time I think for the anti-fuzz brigade to grow up.

By what estimation is that an over reaction? I've seen quite a few fatals in the last 4 years of doing my job; the surprising thing is the majority tend to happen because one of, if not all of, the vehicle occupants are doing something they shouldn't. I know NW Motorway Police and Midlands Motorway Police Group see themselves as less of Law Enforcement Service but more of a Death Prevention Service.

Drink aside.

Waving anything out of a window into 3 lanes of traffic isn't probably best advisable.

Were they wearing seatbelts?

Were they speeding?

Was the car taxed, MOT'd, Insured?

The next thing will be, if he's got a can in his hand; do they have a reasonable suspicion to pull the car and breath test the driver? I would.

What you've done is seen something, and assumed nothing.

Who said the driver was drinking......My point was 3 cars a bike and chopper were deployed to stop a car with someone waving a flag and another PASSENGER showing off his can of Carling.....

Read my post again James, why ,if your not drinking and driving, why give the police the impression that you are, they were asking to be pulled and with police in the vicinity it was crass idiocy and the driver if he had any sense would have told his drinking passenger to keep the cans and flags out of sight.

A passenger who, baring only luck, very nearly fell out of the car whilst doing 60 mph in the fast lane.

That's outrageous if they have done nothing more than that? Did you follow their entire journey?

 As it says in the opening post they were pulled over further up the road so we didn't follow their entire journey as their journey was cut very short by the police and we went past them.

The Chopper was on match duty and the car passengers were showing off as they passed the Vale Coach convoy ON the dual carriageway (Parkway) as we left Sheffield........Obviously one of the Police Motorbike in our escort saw and reported them before they joined the M1 at J33........The Chopper tracked them and the 3 cars and bike stopped them about 8 miles down the road........

From what I can remember of the law, its been a long time and things change, its not an offense for passengers to drink or be drunk in a motor vehicle, I dont think its an offense to restrict the view from the window of a vehicle provided it does not impede the drivers vision... so unless Im missing something I cant see what they did wrong... it would be interesting to know what the police bill was.

Perfectly normal behaviour!
