You'd think that over a million killings by guns in the last 33 years would encourage them to do something about it.

 

Americans are trying to do something about the gun laws particularly now after the Connecticut tradegy, over 80% of people are in favour of reform. Obama is doing his best to ensure reform happens. The two major issues are;

 

1) The Republican Party are mostly pro-gun and the NRA in the USA provides financial support for the party and for senior Republican politicians, hence the NRA wields disproportianate power on this issue in relation to the size of its member base. Many Republican party members are realising this is a vote loosing strategy but speaking out about it has led to withdrawal of financial support for sitting politicians and candidates hence its either tow the line or you're out.

2) Its enshrined in the constitution for someone to have the right to bear arms and it would take many years to modify it.
