I remember Arthur.  He formed a great partnership with Bert Llewellyn.  Freddie Steele had taken over from Norman Low.  Freddie's second spell at Vale was an unmitigated disaster.  Great coach though Freddie was, his record in the transfer market was woeful.  Two of his biggest mistakes was getting rid of Arthur Longbottom and Bert Llewellyn.  Can you imagine selling two 20 goal a season strikers today for peanuts!    He got rid of both of them within weeks of taking over. I think it was Freddie's way of trying to say who was boss.

Arthur could have gone on to be a longer term hero at Vale Park.  His career record was a goal every three games at Vale it was slightly better than that.  

He went to Oxford and was a significant factor in them becoming the first team from Div 4 to reach the 6th round of the FA Cup (no team at tier 4 has ever gone further).  They knocked out Blackburn on the way, back then Blackburn were one of the big teams in Div 1.

Arthur's time at Vale as short, too short, but he left a very positive impression.  RIP Sir
