In the wake of the ESL a motion has been laid in parliament to introduce fan ownership of Football clubs.  This follows the 50+1 model as operated in Germany. Is this a good thing?

I think it's a tricky one. I think on the face of it the 50+1 rule seems a sensible one, allowing fans to control who invests and having a majority to vote them off if needs be. I don't think it would do any harm.

However, as our current owners show (and Leicester showed in the Cup Final) there are benevolent owners out there. And as previous owners have shown, there can be ones who prove both unsuited and unpopular.

So, for me, the type of ownership isn't that important (it's probably good to have a mix of fan-led and individually owned clubs) but there needs to be better checks on owners and the ability for the League to act if someone is clearly wrecking a club. In other words, what is important is the ability to check new investors before they have any power in a club and stop existing owners if they become a problem.

I guess the 50+1 rule helps because no individual would have overall control (so for that reason it's a good move) but there needs to be other moves too. Perhaps changing the status of all football clubs to community assets or similar, perhaps putting the stadia in the ownership of local communities so owners can't sell them off - things like those. It's a long and complex subject, I guess.

Not if TylerB was the +1. We'd be bankrupt with weekly manager payoffs within 3 months
