Student grants/loans

Harvard is a private University and having a high or perfect SAT score doesn't guarantee admission, gaining admission depends on good SAT scores but also on other issues like type of degree, outside interests, ethnicity etc. Going for "free" does happen but what that means is that tuition and fees are paid for by Harvard University not the government. Tuition and fees for a Harvard undergrad course are >$60,000/year for 4 years.

In addition to these costs there are accommodation, living/food and book costs etcm which the student will fund either by working or taking on student loans or if they're lucky by money from their families. It's fairly rare for any student to be given money from a University/Government for these types of costs. Hence, students work whilst at college in all types of jobs, waiting tables is popular 'cause it's a way to earn good money from tips.

Tuition for a Harvard undergrad course is around $45000/year, tuition, fees, room and board are around $60,000.

Higher education tuition/fees in the UK should be free for people straight from school, there should be means tested grants for adequate living costs etc especially for specialities (Medicine, Sciences, Maths and Engineering etc) which are necessary for the welfare and prosperity of the country. It is vital the UK has world class Universities as these days they've become the hubs of innovation and design and for high tech industries of the future.

Cost should never be a barrier to gaining a worthwhile education, it's the key to changing and improving lives. A thriving UK benefits everyone in the UK and elswhere.

The problem is the labour government encouraged all school leavers to attend college and university. Basically to make unemployment stats look better, if you're still in education you aren't unemployed. Most students these days study , sociology, David beckhamology and pretendology. Pointless education which doesn't get them a job just keeps them out of a proper job for 5 years.

The first port of call should be to stop Scotland's free higher education and bring back apprentice ships / yts schemes. Most kids are stupid these days, they leave school with good grades but no common sense and the in ability to make a cup of tea. It's become about passing exams not learning and statistics, it's only going to get worse as we get these academies which concentrate on results , anyone can teach someone to pass an exam , it's a lot more difficult to teach someone the entire topic.
