Another day, another bookies favourite for the job

Rob Fielding argues that in the case of the next Vale manager, the bookies odds mean very little. Rob Fielding writes… Another day, another managerial candidate at the top of the list.*This time it’s former Mourinho player Bruno Ribeiro. Will he get the job? Frankly, who knows… The funny thing is that this time the […]

I'm not sure in Rob's comments who Bruno Morais is, perhaps he means Bruno Ribeiro?

The Chairman pointed out a few days ago that getting the next manager appointment right was vital and so I would have thought, as this a Vale fans message board, that fans would be all over these threads with their views.

Whether the bookies have got this one right or not, one thing is clear when the decision is made it will be to late for fans to influence the decision.

The point about timings makes no sense: are you suggesting if he'd appointed the new manager the same day Pagey left the fans would have had an influence? Nonsense

In addition, why should they influence the decision; the fans won't be paying his wages? Talk about an over-inflated sense of self importance, sorry to break it to you, the fans don't own part of the club anymore

You're simply moaning for the sake of it and grabbing at straws

Fans have huge power, Chairman sack managers when fans vote with their feet and don't attend games. Why do you think the Vale Chairman tweets when he reads fans comments about someone like Dickov?

Your comment Yukon that fans won't be paying his wages is as daft as it gets, of course the fans are paying his wages!

The bookies know bugger all, they just lay the money off other people are prepared to throw away. The more money on one particular person reduces the odds so the bookies dont lose.

We had brown as favourite previously... [will it be him? smurf says no but money still poured in for him]... we were favourite to get relegated last season... [did it happen]

Bookies play the odds so they dont lose, they dont care or have an opinion who it will be, they leave that to the "smart" money.. if everyone bet Stevie Wonder was getting the job he would become favourite... but it would just be... superstition

I'll give you not attending buy the rest of your post is daft. The appointment has nothign to do with the fans, he will employ tactically. He's seen journey man Adams and cheap option Page, this time he's trying something different. Just because a bookie says Dickov and the fans go into their usual meltdown, does not mean he was ever in with a chance.

The manager's pay is down to the chairman entirely- by deciding on a budget and working within it. Of course the fans indirectly fund the manager but they don't pay his wages and it's incredibly glib and short sighted to claim the fans pay it

I tend to agree with Geo and Yukon. The bookies know bugger all in this instance, but no information will have been leaked from the club. Everybody is guessing so their prices will more than likely be put together by:

- Excerpts from Smurf's interview. Putting two and two together and getting five in most cases (Kuqi, Brown etc)

- Coming on OVF and other forums and seeing what the fans are saying

- Finally, the most sure of them all is that the bookies get a few quid on one name and have to slash their odds because there's next to no cash actually in the market. As other people have said in other threads, a tenner can move someone from an also-ran to hot favourite. They won't want to lose any money on something like this so they'll protect themselves as much as they can.

This whole saga has a feeling of unreality to me. We are told there are three calibre managers who all want to manage Port Vale and are prepared to do it for less pay than they are use too.

At the same time they are being interviewed by a Chairman who basically wants out of the club, I agree Yukon that is certainly different.
