And telling them it's not their fault as it's a disease will be even worse. An addict doesn't think of the implications, but that is only once they have become addicts. Someone doesn't suddenly come down with the 'disease' and have no choice but to take the drugs. There is a path that has to be taken, and you only become an addict through the choices you take.

Having debated all that, i am not arguing that addicts don't need help and support.

No is saying it isn't their fault. Labelling something as a disease doesn't absolve them. It allows the population to start recognising that we have many people struggling, and dying, and that we need to help.

Addiction often leads to drugs but it's not always the end result. It depends on what surrounds you, what you have access to and at what point you are saved from going any further.

nonsense, JH. you're seriously saying you get the same results regardless of your attitude towards it? so there's no such thing as your body giving up when you give up mentally?

If two people go thru identical treatment their attitude makes no difference..other factors will make a difference but their attitude will not.

There is no evidence to suggest otherwise and belive me I have seen people very very close to me 'fight' cancer and the progress of the illness was exactly as the medical experts predicted before the "fight" started.

You are suggetsing that in some way those who don't "fight" are contributing to their own illness and death, what a horrible thing to say.

To be honest, I dont think we are worlds apart in our opinions as it may seem on the surface.

Still, no one who claims addiction is a disease has answered my question. Is smoking a disease?

no, I'm suggesting in some cases that's true. what about psychosomatic people?

With cancer undoubtedly ones attitude affects how well you deal with it but it won't affect the outcome except that your attitude might push you to cope with the treatment..someone with a less positive attitude might give up on the treatment.

There is no evidence to suggest that attitude ultimately affects the outcome given all other things (treatement for example) being equal

Here is my take

No smoker starts out with the intention of developing lung cancer

No drug taker starts out intending to become an addict

Smoking is a recreational activity as is drug taking

Smoking can lead to lung cancer, drug taking can lead to addiction

Lung canceer cannot be cured without treatment and it's the same for addiction...a true addict cannot simply 'give up' thru willpower alone, they need treatment.

Genuine addiction is a disease.

Smoking can lead to addiction. Its a drug thats addictive and can kill you like many others. The only difference is that we label it as legal and socially acceptable.
