The problem seems to be the ridiculous "premium" paid for British players, hence why clubs are looking for technically superior South American players for the same price.

True but at the same time Bale was a 'glamour'/Galactico signing..Sanchez was not so there is a premium to be paid for the former

I seem to recall listening to the radio yesterday that of current players from outside the EU this would have affected a grand total of 8 of them

 

The papers this morning reckon there are 42 players since 2010 who would fail the new work permit test. Two of them are Diouf and Cameron at Stoke.

So Dyke et al don't want to stop the outstanding non EU talent playing in England, but opposes 'bog-standard non EU players' cluttering the 'Championship and below.

 

Are they for real? Is the atmosphere around them rarefied?

 

Unless there is a mechanism to filter down more money to the 3rd and 4th tiers of the English game there will be no way the likes of Port Vale F.C. will be the market for other than 'bog standard non EU players' (Dyke's words).

Dyke announces that he will restrict Non -EU players. I think he should be fair and restrict EU..but he is not. So yes, I would say Politics is a two way tool here
