Away support

After pointing out to a stoke fan that vale took over 6000 to aston villa a few years back compared to the pathetic 2000 they took yesterday,i wondered how many times last year and the year before did we take 2000 away supporters to a game?

Another point you missed that in 2006, Villa, knowing that Vale fans are from a low paid class area that is Stoke on Trent, they actually reduced the prices from their normal Premiership admission fees to around £20 per supporter. Stoke fans yesterday would have had to pay full prices possibly I suppose around £35-£45.

I actually feel sorry for Stoke supporters. Many I know would love to return to the days when they had lower admission prices and less 'plastic' fans attending just to see the big stars. Many actually resent and hate the Premier league in respect of its greed...I bet TP can vouch for what I am saying.

A very true post. For a family man (or woman) who wants to attend an away game with, say, 2 kids, the outing could cost up to £200 with petrol and food, even more if it is Arsenal or someone else who charge a fortune for entry. That is more than a weeks income for some people, and certainly over a weeks food and household costs for anyone.

That could well be the reason, and few people are going to go hungry to fund some prancing overpaid greedy Premiership prima donnas and add to Sky profits.

Stoke's away following is up and down depending on how they're doing, just like us and every other team. They tool 1000 to City earlier this season and they've taken 1400 to Man U before. Both are shocking followings for a club their size in the prem.

Us on the other hand, 700 to Walsall, 300 to Barnsley, the season we went up we took 300 to Cheltenham. All shocking followings.

To answer the op though, in the last few years we've taken over 2k to; Crewe, Wolves, Chesterfield, Burton, Rochdale, Wycombe, Bury, Sheff U (FA Cup)...plus plenty over 1k. For a club our size with our home support, the away followings we take on occasion is brilliant.

Cheshire Valiant, we took about 750 to Gills the season we went up. Took a similar number to Barnet too. Great support for such long distances, especially Gills.

Good knowledge and stats there.

Only one you missed out was the 2,500 sell out for Macclesfield away (though other posters have since mentioned it). Biggest Vale away League following I recall in recent seasons was the 3,000 fans for Wycombe away in the promotion season when we filled two stands at Adams Park. Memorable day which won't be forgotten by those that were there. Sheff United in the FA Cup couple of seasons ago you mentioned I think we took around 3,300.

Hoping that we take between 1,500-2,000 for Coventry away in two weeks time. Quite a few fans will choose this fixture over Notts County away imo.

More often than not, the Vale travel in good numbers to the local games (with Crewe, Macc and Wolves being the perfect examples). However we don't travel particularly well to the long-distance games. Our followings at places like Colchester and Crawley this season will probably reflect that.

1,200 do to Man City at £45 a pop if memory serves me right, the Man Utd game we sold out the smaller allocation at £46 a ticket I think it was. The next game to look forward to is Chelsea away, just been moved to a 17.30 kick off live on SKY and a ticket will set you back £50. Hand on heart how many would shell out that much for a game that they could watch at home or in the pub?

Yes but Stoke put on free coaches, take the £22- £25 then add £15-£18 coach travell for us, and the price is not much different.

They didn't do it because we were from a low paid class area, they did it because it was an unattracrive tie for them and they wanted to attract more fans as a number of clubs do in early rounds of competitions.

Brum is hardly exceptionally well paid!
