Tomorrow marks the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz.A question ,does anyone think that those dreadful buildings should now be flattened and a beautiful area of remembrance put in their place so survivors can visit as they would visit a cemetery?

Absolutely not.

I have visited there on a number of occasions and always find it very moving and emotional, especially walking in through the famous gates.

It needs to remain in situ so that visitors can see what went on and the horrors that were perpetrated there. It wouldn't be the same if it was raised to the ground and replaced by flower beds.

Absolutely not! That would be the first step towards whitewashing the memory of what happened there! People need to see these sites as they were to get some of the brutal impact of an horrific reality, rather than an anodyne memorial...which might suit the holocaust-deniers!

Pretty unanimous it seems. The reason I asked was, having watched tonight's news ,that there was a survivor ,who was there today, who seemed really distraught and said he wouldn't go back and was shouting 'never again',I presume the shouting 'never again' was about the Holocaust. He was 11 when he entered the camp and immediately his mum and sister were taken away and gassed.I was just thinking it may be easier for survivors to visit. There is enough footage of what happened and a Holocaust museum for people to visit to educate anyone about what happened. Will there ever be any closure for these poor people?

Definitely not for the same reasons as others have said.

I visited Ground Zero in NYC at the weekend and obviously a different situation as the scene was one of total devastation but some of the most poignant items/artefacts in the 9/11 museum, which is housed in the "basement" of the towers, are those recovered from the Towers including a flight of stairs that people escaped down, twisted metal beams, parts of the planes and the actual area where the car bomb went off in the first attempt on Tower 1(?) in 1993 etc.
