I havent really been following that case so I hadnt thought about it but it makes you wonder. Perhaps SA are chasing the murder tourism business.

I listened to quite a lot of it (not all of it, admittedly) and I think if the police hadn't been so negligent at the crime scene and he wasn't wealthy enough to afford top defence lawyers then the result would have been a lot different.

I am so glad to see the end of this (at least for now). Celebrity trials are turning news into the new X-factor, whether they are here or in South Africa or the USA.

5 years - same as a certain footballer got for rape. fair to compare or not ?

 

10 months in cushy cushy then untold millions for his 'story' - almost the best pay possible ?

 

Why can't the law be changed so that a defendant's name cannot be publicised until and unless they are convicted (ie found guilty) - this would smash the tabloid tattle merchants, be much fairer, and stop the relentless march towards trivialisation of the news by making it all about celebrities. no doubt this story will get more headlines than Ebola, Syria, Ukraine and all the rest put together.

Nooo... the trials would be held openly and in public, but no reporting on them until after they had finished. Families and other interested parties allowed in the court. I may be wrong, but doesn't something like this apply in France already ?

With social media there is no way the identity of the accused could remain a secret. I think we have rules about crims profiting from their activities such as writing books after coming out of prison and so on but then again once they've done their time, why not....blame those that buy the book...like that OJ Simpson one "If I had done it this is how" or something like that..what kind of sicko bought that

Not sure. I have mr nice book on the shelf by howard marks. Have also attended talks by him telling his story.

If he'd been from a township he'd be serving life now, of that I have no doubt. Mandela's dream is a very long way from being realised
