Magnificent player for Liverpool and excellent player for England, 16 goals in 71 competitive games from midfield for his country. Should have stayed around to play a part in the upcomming Euro qualifiers for his experience alone.

Gerrard was unfortunate in his last game that Suarez and training ground familiarity cost a goal. But he has performed well for England otherwise.

Silly decision if you ask me. He may not be first choice any more, but he has a lot to offer the youngsters coming through. What if we desperately need an experienced head 12 months down the line for a crucial game? It's selfish, he's basically saying he can't cope with not being picked. What ever happened to serving your country? Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country?

 

 

Have you seen our Euro Qualifiers group? We don't need him now time to give the youngsters the experience they need.

Always wore the shirt with pride unlike many of todays lot.

 

Granted, he was poor this world cup and his very best days are behind him, but id prefer have him for the next two years to bed the young lads in and improve their game tenfold.

But then this is England and their fans we are talking about.

 

So who gets thrown in the fire to replace him?

Jack Wilshere?

Tom Cleverley?

Any more ideas?

Tom Cleverley? Ha! ha! don't make me laugh. Anyway back to your comment - if stating the obvious is slagging people off then perhaps England managers should start being honest with themselves and the players. As fans we all know he's tried his best (and should do) but we've also witnessed his demise from the box to box player he was to a midfield player who plays about 3 foot in front of the back four. Strange in the early days of Lampard/Gerrard combo they couldn't play together because neither would sit now they both want to sit.

The one think that appeared from this world cup as far as I could see the successful teams looked for forward passes from midfield we are transfixed with passing square or back. Until we get a manager to get us out of that defensive attitude I'm afraid it will be more of the same. We also need to get away from only picking from the top 5 teams there are better players down below those teams. Lets face it the arrival of Rogers at Liverpool gave Hodgson an idea and players he didn't have before.

 

Thanks Steven for all your efforts but you decision will no doubt prolong your Liverpool career but will let England hopefully move forward.

Not really related to anything, but I'd sooner pay tribute to another England player who hung up his gloves yesterday and gave far more to an England shirt than Gerrard ever did.

Great servant for england, so often expected to do everyone elses dirty work.

 

Such a shame he wasnt given the role he played for liverpool as i think he could have carried england further than those who he had to sit back and defend for, ala lampard, rooney, j cole etc. **** poor management with probably the best generation of players we have had over the last 12 years and we won nothing, in fact didnt even make a semi final did we?

 

The FA should take note and how roy hodgson is still in a job is beyond me. What we have to replace either gerrard or hodgson worries me even more though!
