Outfield Goalkeepers

Brown Edge Normski

Recommended Posts

With all the recent talk about Popey having to go between the sticks if big Sam gets injured during a game it got me thinking.

If I'm not mistaken one night match away to Blackpool our goalkeeper (think it was Connaughton or Ball) had to go off for treatment to an injury. Ally Brown stepped into the breach for a period until the keeper came back on.

Think we managed a draw.:anyonesign:

August '86 at home to Rotherham after Mark Grew got injured.

I seem to remember Liam Burns having to go in goal too but can't remember who against.

Thiught it was for grewy. Have no idea how people can remember dates like that though. Faces yes, but I can't remember what data it was yesterday.

I remember Paul miller being the potential stand in but not sure he actually got a chance. Always used to wear the gloves during the warm up though.

The following week away at Brentford Jones had to go in goal again for a while when Jim Arnold was receiving treatment for an injury.

I forgot he came back, before we signed alex Williams? Amazing to think Jim Arnold only started as a professional keeper aged nearly 30, yet sill sat on the bench during a European final.

I have to look on Soccerbase to check the dates but I remember the game well, Grew did his knee in and was out for most of the season and we lost Alan Webb for part of the game too while he had stitches in a bad head wound but he returned the hero with a bandage on and covered in blood.:)

That was the first time Ainsworth wore a Vale shirt. The Preston keeper (Simon Farnworth) got stretchered off in his so we had to find a spare top for him.

In my time watching Vale I can only remember Liam Burns v Wigan and Paul Millar on the Boundary Park plastic.
