28th September 2013, Tranmere Rovers v Port Vale, Pre match, Match

Pretty tempted to go this game with being back in the Potteries this weekend visiting family.

Only a 1 hour journey from Stoke so I would like to expect a minimum 1,000 Vale following, as we all know we travel pretty well to the more local games. Probably in the region of 1,100-1,300 will make the trip imo. Winning last Saturday against Coventry should help in adding another couple of hundred more away fans to the turnout. Decent admission prices will persuade a few more to go and by the sounds of it there are a few people running coaches and mini-buses aside from the official travel.

On the pitch I think it will be another entertaining game with a fair few goals again. They are capable of scoring a few like we are having looked at their recent result against Brentford but like us, they also ship in a few aswell.

I'm going for a 2-2 scoreline prediction. Popey and Dodds on target for the Vale.

Williamson is an impact sub. If fit start Hughes and pope up top. If Christ can get some of the quality balls into the area with Hughes and pope on the end it gives us a great chance to pinch a couple of goals.

I know some thing MA is the Messiah, but crikey, is he getting his son to play for us now ;)

But we know that JC isn't good when it comes to crosses? Plus whilst he can play in three positions at the same time the holy ghost is a rather ineffective player

Tranmere is my nearest league club and as well as following Port Vale I have watched them quite a lot over the last 26 years. I went to their last home game against Brentford where they lost 3-4. They have an immature team with a lot of players who have come through the youth system and at the same time are held together in defence by Goodison who was an excellent centre half but is now nearly 41 years old. They are in a bad state and have taken only 17 points from the last 75 available. Against Brentford they sleep walked to 0-2 in the opening phase then got back to 2-2 and 3-3 before losing to an injury time penalty. They are capable of playing good football in bursts but Vale should win this if the team turns up well focused. Pope needs use his muscle and power against the central defence and we need plenty of crosses. Tranmere can play through teams quite well so the team needs to keep a good shape and watch them on the deck in front of the back four. Most of all we need to start at 100mph and keep their lack of confidence in place. If they score they will grow confidence and become a harder proposition. The pitch is something to adapt to as it is an altogether tighter ground than Vale Park. I'm confident of us winning, but I don't like to see my second team flirting with relegation.

Go with the team that finished Saturday with the "we'll score one more than you" mentality. Play to our strength which is attacking, the best form of defence.

Isn't this essentially the same team selection that started the Carlisle game which you subsequently started slating Adams for his negative dire tactics?

You change your mind very quickly and drastically on occasions don't you

Scrolling through this thread I was thinking exactly the same thing.

With JMW and Hughes being ill last week and Ive noticed a couple of development squad players complaining too and I hope someone gets the bleach out and we don't get any first team absentees for this one.

I think Hughes will be back...I think his absence last week may have been more to do with the fact that unfortunately his 'past' has connections to a Coventry fan....I think staying away last week was the right thing to do in the circumstances...and respect to whoever made the decision.

That may have been the reason but JMW did have a virus which seems to have affected a couple of others.

I'm not entirely convinced Hughes wasn't ill.
