More than good enough for conference as was comfortably good enough in League 2. For some reason a few on here seem to hate the lad (dont know why, he had one bad game last year when the whole team had a mare) despite the fact he always did well and gave his all for us; in fact his performance at Bradford away was easily the best performance by any defender I saw last season.

We know about his off field history, but what sort of a player have we signed?

Grimsby Town fan in peace

Mac's a big lad, always puts a shift in and will give 100%,he aint the most gifted player but he wont let you down,he'll be a stand out cb in non league but doubtful if he'd make league 1 standard.I would expect you to be thereabouts at the season end, good luck.

Hard working, passionate, good distribution.

Slightly erratic at times but if you get over the fact that he's not the quickest (which some people are obsessed about on here) then you will realise that you have a decent defender on your hands.

Didn't his leaving coincide with our dip in form?

Still, the fact that no-one higher has come in for him suggests I over-rated him.

He wasn't helped by people in the crowd singing "he sh*gs who he wants".

Just as sitting on bristol rovers bench coincided with them doing better. Correlation is not the same as causation.

You may well wish you hadn't asked Grimsby fan, given the wide difference of opinion. There are a small number of posters on here who are right moaners though, so ignore the repeated posts that criticise - you have signed a player who will give you excellent service in that league.

Clayton had a number of superb games for Vale last season, notably at Bradford and in the Cup at Forest Green Rovers. He played a lot of games in the third best defence in a division one above yours.

No player at this level is without some weaknesses, and his heading could sometimes be better. He isn't the quickest player either, but will play with heart and soul and be far better than most of the defenders in the teams you are up against.

The vast majority of us wish him well, he did a good job for us and I am sure he will for Grimsby too.
