  1. Wow some of the posts on here, lets just remember where we were 18mths ago and what happened last season before we all have breakdowns 5 games have been played in the league,i would sooner see where we are after the first 10,far more important things to worry about than a manager at a football club......oh the same manager the majority were wanting to give a knighthood to after last season.

  2. I like Askey and think he has done a good job since taking over and wouldn't want to judge him untill end of the season. However I think the last three games are worrying because in all three games we should have made formation changes after about 30 mins. Saturday it was obvious 442 wasn't working and the midfield was overwhelmed. The week before was the opposite after 30 mins we had so much of the ball could have easily go two up top and probably gone to an attacking 352. I think a higher league manager would have made changes during the matches and not let them drift in the way we have don

  3. How about the government chuck a few quid at football - they’ve just given a huge wedge to the Arts. That would make any deal with the greedy bastards in the Prem irrelevant. Why not reduce the Prem to 6 teams to give them more time to fanny about in Europe and China?

  4. I would loved to be have been a fly on the wall in the dressing room this morning, would he have blamed the players who turned out on Saturday ? Or would he have accepted he selected the wrong personnel ? I wonder if the senior players spoke out, because they would have realised what a shambles it was against Carlisle. Playing the system he did on Saturday hung a few out to dry, criticism is coming in on McKirdy who remember was top scorer for Carlisle last season, he wouldn't have scored one with the service he got on Saturday, Robinson scored 10 times last season I think for Colch

  5. It strikes me that his head was turned. After two goalless and rather sterile games, we go to Wigan, play 442 and score some goals. He likes to reward decent performances, so gave it another go. It's understandable It looked like a potential solution. Looking back, it looks all wrong for many reasons. This doesn't mean 442 will never work, but it was clearly wrong on the day, making us weak and them strong. I'm sure many lessons will have been learned and have no doubt that the next two games will see us going back to what got us to 8th last season.

  6. Let's hope Scholes is of the Gary neville school of management He lasted 7 games at Oldham winning once! 14% win ratio.

  7. Whilst we're at it, let's pretend that John askey didn't take us to the brink of the playoffs last season following 2 successive seasons of nearly dropping out of the FL altogether, let's pretend that we haven't beaten Exeter away and wigan away, let's pretend that the progress that the club has made over the past year and a half hasn't happened, let's pretend that Rome was built in a day......

  8. I thought Gibbo had a pretty good season last season bar a couple of dodgy games. Certainly one of the more consistent players I thought. But on the other hand as we all know Sproson has it in for certain players that aren’t his. He even did it to Clarke on Saturday. Granted Clarke wasn’t at his best but he didn’t warrant some of the crap Sproson was coming out with.

  10. In no way whatsoever do I want to change the manager, Askey has shown that he is more than capable of getting us up and running, but Saturdays game was very strange, with no attempt to change the formation in an attempt to get back in the game, all the changes made for me were like for like so nothing changed, as I said I would love to know what was said this morning.

  11. Did I say that? I'm as disappointed as anybody with the last couple of league performances, but I'm not so shortsighted as to forget at a stroke the progress that has been made under the very same manager that you are lambasting and am willing to give him more than 5 league games before I start to question whether him. I dread to think what would have happened to John rudge had social media been around to allow people like yourself a platform in his early years as manager. Get a grip, calm down, and come back in 10 league games time.

  12. I have to confess I have some worries about Askey. Last season he did really well for us, exceeded our expectations and took everyone by surprise. This season he’s been outwitted now on three occasions, early in the season, and he seems to struggle to know what to do to put things right, both ahead of the game and during it. After last week, I don't blame him for changing the formation but his player selection was poor, leaving out arguably our best midfielders and then, when we’re overwhelmed in midfield, waiting too long to change it. It was patently obvious we had no control of the gam

  13. Perfectly poised for a classic Vale performance. Undoubtedly back to basics, 433, high press. They're a team who will attack us. Such a relief 😃

  14. Hardly outwitted...it wasn't anything Carlisle did that caused a sitter of a header to be missed, nor a penalty...and the subsequent follow-up! Those two go in and it's, undeniably, a different game. Missing both clearly gave them more confidence. I don't blame JA for making changes, at any time - with so many players capable of playing in more than one position, and of similar abilities, changes may be made for any number of reason - physical or mental - and these known to the coaching staff, only. I thought it was quite an adventurous team...and going two up early on would have shown that. M

  15. Great discussion on radio five now. The government have abandoned us. This is the only show in town at the moment.

  18. Askey was nominated for Manager of the Month for September. September was less than a fortnight ago!

  19. Having heard the small print on Radio Stoke then I'm far more pessimistic on the outcome of this project. The 25% funding for the EFL comes after the £250 million bailout grant has been repaid and after the big six sell off some of their matches abroad and pocket the cash.

  20. I don't think it's a "love in", more like fans being realistic. Most would agree that on Saturday the team was a surprise and the performance and result would clearly indicate it was a mistake. The facts are that we had a great season last year, expectations are understandably high, but it's far to early to start scrutinising the manager.

  21. Pretty low I would imagine. They're unbeaten. Nothing to bounce from.

  23. If the 'big six' break away again, I won't have a great deal of sympathy with the 'other 14'. Teams like Palace are only making ridiculous sums of money because they're part of a collective tv deal. They're makeweights to form a league of 20. Very few people globally are buying TV subscriptions for the prospect of watching Crystal Palace. The invisible hand was always going to stick two fingers up at them sooner or later.

  24. So the last few performances haven't been a worry for you at all then? And neither have team selections and tactics? I'll have some of what you're smoking.

  25. We'll probably get something against Salford as we can only be miles better. Lose the next couple of games though and what started as a very promising season potentially could turn into an absolute drag suddenly. For me our squad is still top 6 material, and we should be better than 7 points from 15. If someone had told me we would get that after the first 2 games I would have fallen on the floor laughing. It's all on Askey now to get the team right and get us going again, and quickly.

  26. Just seen some commentary on England from Rob Green: “England are finding the answers without playing particularly well”. That’s something we have totally failed to do over the last three games. As someone said, Carlisle saw out the last half hour very comfortably indeed. That is perhaps one of the biggest concerns, that nobody on (or indeed off) could pinpoint and exploit an area of weakness, and anybody had the desire to make something happen. Apart Whitehead’s shot which landed on Dimensions roof, I can’t remember anything else of note in the Carlisle penalty area after the penalt

  28. All depends on what team turns up. Typical Vale sides, you expect them to win and they loose. Expect the team to loose and they win hands down. Never easy being a Vale fan. Must of us are happy if they at least turn up and look like they are trying to win the ball, rather than being second best to everything. They will probably come and try to play, so hopefully they will leave gaps for our players to run into and cause problems.

  29. As for ranting about it only being Carlisle... no game is a given. Its hugely naive bordering on pathetic to just look at a club this early on and expect to get a result. Morcombe for example are top of the league. People are expecting Cheltenham to be up there but Morcombe beat them at there place. Its too early to know who the good sides are yet, especially under these strange times with no fans and stretched budgets. Folk need to calm down a bit and stop borrowing trouble. We will be there come the end of the season.

  30. Do people actually think Askey asks them to play like that? We had a good result against Wigan and after mini dip prior he owed a chance to those from that game to start this one. Carlisle turned out to be better than we thought however they should have been buried before then. Askey didn't ask Rodney to miss that sitter or for Pope to have his penalty saved. If they go in, we cruise to a convincing home win. That's why this thread is ridiculous at this stage. All these folk claiming to have doubts about him, really? We would have made play offs last season against all the odd

  32. The very thought of Sam Collins running at players made me smile. He was a less than cultured centre half who was a row Z centre half.

  33. If the PL doesn't want the League Cup then why not just exclude them from the draw and make it a proper "EFL Cup" for League clubs only rather than abolishing it. It may not be as prestigious but it may give clubs that otherwise have no chance of a domestic trophy a chance to win one, give clubs in the latter stages a pay day and so on... It may even be an idea to have it replace the "Football League and B sides Trophy"...

  34. Like @robfI was optimistic beforehand given the line up, but it shows that the first 11 is finely tuned and if there are absences or players off their game then we look a very ordinary, dare I say quite poor, side. A reversion to 4-3-3 is needed. I’d have a back 4 of Clarke, Legge, Brisley/Smith and Fitz; Joyce, Conlon and Worrall; then Monty, Rodney and McKirdy. Moving Worrall into midfield is the only way I can see us having enough energy and creativity but admit this isn’t perfect. I really don’t like Rodney wide and think he’s more effective down the middle. And it’s time for McKirdy

  35. If that penalty had been given against us we’d be moaning all week what a shocking decision it was and ok we missed a clear chance with Rodneys header but that was it over 90 mins and to say it’s just a blip I’m not so sure

  36. I will hold my hand up and say I thought he'd named a really attacking formation and I welcomed it at 2pm. I also thought Whitehead had looked good before Saturday. I was a bit surprised at the dropping of Joyce and Conlon but I wondered if that was JA giving a "no-one is undroppable" message. But my reaction shows why I'm no football manager! For what it's worth... - Had Rodney's header or that penalty gone in it could have been a different story. I'm not blaming Pope - he's got nothing to prove after his years at the club - but those were the golden chances and either could h

  37. The simple fact of the matter is that the players have not played well enough often enough so far. I think JA got it wrong today but nobody was moaning last season when we were flirting with the playoffs. We've kept the same players, and added one or two more to the squad, but we haven't clicked yet. Plus we've had a bit of bad luck with injuries. The main thing for me is that several of the players, no names, haven't individually hit the form that they showed last season. I think today John got suckered by the midweek performance, against a weak Wigan team, who I think with a full s

  38. You can win games if a couple of players dont perform but when all have that off day together then that is a problem, yes score that header and the penalty and its a different game but we didnt so we move on. Two tough games coming up now though

  39. I think he miss understands some points, we needed him last week when it was long ball for the reason he is trying to express... he can hold it up, we needed him against Harrogate for example too when it wouldn't stick and was just coming back at us. He is outstanding as a hold up player so that is what most were crying for.
