I think we lost to the <ovf censored> at their old dump and then at home to Wolves so we were out of the running on the last day if I remember rightly.

Indeed, Wolves already sure of a PO had the Hamil and Bycars as I remember and outclassed us.

I think the time they gave them the Hamil and Bycars was when we went down a few years later as I think that was Mark Goodlads debut for us. Back in them days they’d give the really big away followings the Hamil and then the Lorne Street side of the Hamil.

Correct, drew at Palace last game who had already taken the last play off place, they ended up going up in the play offs. So I would say we were knocking on the door that season.

According to wikipedia, we were 5th after beating Oldham, were down to 6th after the Stoke game and then ended up 8th. Incredible to think we were so close.

Indeed it was an incredible season. I think Lee Mills had some ridiculous scoring run at the back end of that season. I don’t think it’s controversial to say that if we had held on to Guppy we’d have made the playoffs. Obviously nothing is guaranteed and I get why we didn’t want to lose him on a Bosman but I think that was the difference.

Didnt Mills go to Bradford City and they ended up in the Prem a season or 2 later?

Didn’t we have Guppy till the end of the season? I thought him and McCarthy left at the same time.

No Guppy got sold to Leicester for about £900k some time before what used to be the old transfer deadline in around March as they tried giving Wayne Corden a go. McCarthy then went to Blues a few months into the season after when Ainsworth came in.
