In which local cinema did you see your first film and what was the film?

It's a shame that what was once considered terrifying is now often considered lame. I can remember my dad going to see The Hills Have Eyes at the cinema and literally passing out because he was so freaked out by it. When I was younger there were (no doubt apocryphal) stories about people dying with fright whilst watching Psycho and challenges to watch The Exorcist on your own. Nowadays, they'd be greeted with a 'pfft' at best. Even Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity seem like films from a bygone age now.

I can't say I've seen a film that scared/frightened me.... I do find horror fascinating though. I saw the exorcism alone, interesting but not scary,  enjoyed alien, bored with slasher type movies, Jason, nightmare chainsaw etc. Used to love the old Dracula movies with Christopher Lee

Do you remember when everyone jumped up at the end and ran for the exit before the National Anthem came on?

Not only for horror films, seem to remember no entrance to Psycho after the start of the film and obviously not continuous performances.

I was perhaps six years old. It was a Walt Disney double bill. But it was about the most traumatic two hours of Disney I could have imagined.

Old Yeller

Bambi.

My poor mother must've wondered what the hell she'd done to my sister and me.

It would have been less traumatic to see a horror film 555

Long before going with my mates to the Capitol ABC Cinema on Saturday mornings, and later walking out with Ms Jones to see Drumbeat in the Odeon, I would sometimes see films in the local Chapel Halls on Friday nights - usually with my lovely sister and taken by our 2nd eldest brother.

One Chapel Hall was opposite the old Bucknall Primary School in Ruxley Road, the other at the top of Ash Bank opposite the garage and where Beckitts' buses turned around for the return journey to Hanley.

Usually cartoons and a cowboy film - and a sing-a-long of some sort.

I don't remember that but it wasn't my neck of the woods.

Just off on a tangent, I was only asking my wife yesterday if she recalled the days when the TV went off at midnight, the BBC announcer wished us all good night in his best Queen's English, and the test card came on, with a picture of that girl and that high pitched whistling noise.

TV now is on more or less 24/7 with hundreds of channels day and night but back in the late fifties/early sixties we had I think only 2 channels to begin with. BBC2 started in 1964. And it was black and white then of course. I guess it would be the very late sixties before most had a colour TV and even then the contrast wasn't great.

Beware the noise!

Aup Nick, you forgot the Epilogue before close and test pattern 🙃

Ah yes, the BBC...

We were living in 17 Millward Road, Bucknall and mum suggested we get a television to watch Elizabeth II's coronation live (Courtesy of the BBC).

We purchased our 1st ever television from Mr Ellis’ shop in Hanley. It was a Philips ‘Philco’ model with double doors to protect the screen when not in use and arrived a few days before the 1953 F.A. Cup Final Blackpool v Bolton Wanderers.
Because Elizabeth’s Coronation was on a Tuesday we were given a school half holiday and ‘Coronation street parties were organized. Mr. and Mrs. Leese opened their home (8 Millward Road) for a children’s party which included a souvenir ‘Coronation Cup.

Many a time I hum the BBC Newsreel tune and see in my mind’s the banner going left to right in front of a pylon
