Port Vale manager John Askey says it is “not fair” to retain loanees Kyle Howkins and Mark Harris as neither featured in his plans. The duo were allowed to return to their parent clubs early as Askey “cleared the decks” ahead of the club’s final game of the season. Askey said that the club felt […]

I must say that I was hoping that Howkins was part of the Vale's long term plans. In my opinion he is just what we need to partner Smithie as he is young, tall, dominant in the air and most important he was fast for a big fellow.

Maybe his wage demands are out of our price bracket otherwise I can't believe that we failed to try and get him on board the good ship 'Port Vale'

I know Harris only played bit parts but unlike Elliot he didn't make me think there was something there that could work for us. Always find it disappointing/astonishing that young players on the fringe of Premier and Championship teams come to the Vale and look bang average, usually struggling even to make the team in what is a poor League 2 side.

Howkins I had great hopes for as Old Sage said above making a young athletic partnership with Smithie.

That's what happend when clubs have the resources to mop up any lad in and out of their geographical area who can kick a ball.

I find it strange that Askey gave chances to no hopers like Elliot and Vassell but not Howkins who could when fit and regular in the team showed he was capable of playing at Div2 level.

Probably Howkins thought that he would get a regular place after his last loan but Askey did not allow him to play regularly.

When he did play he was capable of holding his place in the team and had the added advantage that he had already played alongside Smith and complemented his style of play.

You have to appreciate he is only young and should improve with more games.

He was solid in defence and was quicker than Legge and won most of the balls coming into the box.

Not playing him regularly and then saying he was unfit is down to Askey and his team.

Whether there was an underlying injury problem not allowing him playing more games I am not sure.
