Diesel and petrol cars to be phased out

Very funny comedian, went to see him at Wolverhampton a few years back where he told the story how he was in the worlds top 100 famous Jews, which he was very proud about despite the fact he is not and has never been a Jew!

IMO the best in the business at telling a story.

Toyota have or are phasing out diesel engines immediately in the range. I think they are encouraging buyers over to hybrid.

I have had a ride in a Nissan Leaf which is used as a customer service car by the local Nissan / Renault garage. It clearly serves the purpose of moving people round town and very capable of keeping up with traffic. The battery is planned to last 10 years before needing replacing. Given it will cost about £5k to replace, the car will not have a residual value to justify that unless the life of electric cars is greater with fewer other parts wearing out?

Fuel cell vehicles are still in contention as an alternative.

This change, combined with driverless cars is coming and in a couple of decades today's cars will seem very old fashioned. The charging issue will cause fundamental design changes to cities. The charging with mass electric cars will occur in roadside parking spaces and be wireless. The battery range issue is being solved with intermediate and then longer term solutions. An intermediate solution is the new Yaris - a hybrid that doesn't require plugging in but spends a substantial amount of time in electric only mode. Maybe very small petrol engines will survive as backups on electric cars?

The tax regime will adjust to the real world. If a source of tax declines another one will be found or public service expenditure will be reduced.

Or there is a possibility the Government does want to reduce CO2 emissions and improve the environment?

There's also a remote possibility the govt is doing things for the people they alledgedly represent but don't hold ya breath as a flying pig goes past ya window🐗🐗

I agree in principle with the idea of electric vehicles. The one thing that does trouble me though is that the electricity has to be produced in the first place.

In this country i think we're still very reliant on coal powered power stations. So having manufacturers say that their vehicle is zero emissions is very misleading.

If we can move over to more sustainable energy production in conjunction with increase in popularity of EVs then all the better.
