1-1 Barnsley at home, 1970.

Eddie has a very sad reason for remembering that game. His Dad was taken ill at the match and died a couple of hours later from a heart attack. He can even remember the Vale goal - an own goal by Barnsley full back Eric Brookes at the Bycars End.

By there's some proper old scrotes on here!

I can't remember who the opposition were for my first match at Vale Park as I was too young but I do know it was when Gordon Lee was manager, we went in the Bycars and the opposition team wore red and green striped shirts. Anyone have any clue as to who that could have been?

I also remember Bobby Gough quite well as he was married to one of my mum's mates.

I was saved from a fate worse than death by my dad's side of the family because a Stoke supporting uncle took me to see the Lardies play Manchester United and my Vale supporting relations had a panic and started taking me to the Vale! I had sinned but at least I got to see George Best and Bobby Charlton play in the flesh!

Blimey. Red and green stripes doesn't ring a bell at all but if it was a second strip back then it might be hard to track down. Sounds horrible.

Sure you are not colour blind?!

"E for B and Gordon Lee."

Could be wrong or a 'perceived memory' as I was only four or five at the time. Unfortunately I have a much clearer memory of seeing the great ManUre side of the time as that was a big event for a small boy!

I have to admit that back then when it was only about 2 shillings to stand on the Stoke End we used to go quite regularly. Caught the bus from the bottom of Scotia Road, got off at Woolworths and walked the 800 yards or so to the ground.

Like you I saw some truly great players back then as almost every top team seemed packed with stars. WHU had Hurst, Peters and Moore, Spurs had Greaves, MU had the Trinity, and so on. Happy memories, as you say.

One wonders why we chose to stick with the black and whites but they were always my local club and my first love - so I've stuck with them for the past 54 years!

Gosh, I know it's a long time ago but sorry to hear that! I could pretty well remember to team from that day but, interestingly, couldn't remember the scorer - you've just cleared up why.
