Your post made me check the date of my first Vale game, as I know it was at Easter. The anniversary of that was 20th April, the match being Brentford 1 Port Vale 2 in the 1961-62 season (so its 55 years ago last week) when after pestering my parents for ages (well over a year), they finally took my brother and me.

Things were much stricter in those days, I had an especially difficult time being allowed to go on my own or with friends my age, and had to wait over a year for the next game, and until 1964 before getting to Vale Park finally.

My father never went again, he was never much interested in football (or in his kids), my brother came with me to about a dozen games over the years and especially enjoyed the Autoglass final, and my late Mum actually came to literally dozens of Vale games over the years when visiting me after moving north, and used to enjoy them too and get quite excited.

I did make a list once of how many people I'd managed to get to a Vale game they wouldn't have otherwise gone to (so a Preston fan attending Vale v Preston doesn't count) and it was more than 30.

A few of them came several times or still do when I can attend, but I know for a fact there are a lot of people who always look at Vale's result because of knowing me, not just in this country either.

When i think of that season always think of the Aston Villa games a 4 all draw at vale park in which Roy Cross managed to score a blinding own goal. Then a 2 nil defeat at villa park in the wet when Bruce Rioch was at his best and just a bit nasty.

Think we were 4-2 down and Tony Loska came on...scored one and made one?

My first game was: Port Vale 2 QPR 3, Sat. 31 March 1962. I was 7 years old.

My grandad took me and we went with my friend and his dad, we stood in the Railway Paddock. My friend still goes to most games, we meet up and go to the Vale when I'm home. My family are mostly Stoke fans but I was never swayed even though I saw Stanley Mathews, Pele, The West Ham trio and was standing 10yds from Ruud Krol when he unleashed his thunderbolt past John Farmer but none of that compares with Ray Walker's winner against Spurs.
