Rob Page on formations

Maybe he was actually trying to say that formations are pointless if the players do not carry out their duties properly and make schoolboy errors: i.e. the formation had nothing to do with McGivern not following his man for the first goal on Saturday! I'm sure that somebody who has played professional football for the best part of 20 seasons understands the importance of having the right shape etc.

Just because someone hasn't played the professional game, it doesn't mean their football opinions are wrong.

This is most disappointing, particularly if he is trying to shift the blame onto individual players. Football is a team game and errors are team errors, except when they are management errors such as poor selection, poor tactics, lack of football knowledge (including understanding of formations), belated and peculiar substitutions.

Can't believe it's such a surprise to some. He's done his apprenticeship under Adams, there is no way I'd want page as the next manager. More worrying is that when we ask why Adams and co can't see what seems obvious on the pitch, it seems like they actually can't. Who cares about formations and tactics, that's foreign nonsense, just get in their face ('hunger and desire') and get the ball forward.

Get a new team in, give them the rest of the season to change the culture, and go again next season.

We all knew there isn't a plan B but now we know there wasn't even a plan A.......seriously though even in league 2 Adams would often get out thought by rookie managers and is quite obviously out of his depth in league 1........failed badly at Brighton and was a disaster at Sheffield utd

who likewise didn't see Adams as a league 1 manager going forward.

Someone made the observation recently on OVF that league 1 has moved on in the last few years or half decade and is now nearer to the Championship

and a considerable jump in class from league 2 which is probably nearer the conference.....Adams was the Fred Flintstone of football tactics

back in the day before the modern era even started and can now be considered something of a museum curiosity or antiquity in the modern game.

The language is all about working hard and character....wanting it more and the rub of the green.....and not about tactics and systems along with

technical coaching and player development.....essentially it is a bag of superstitions and hoodoo in place of evidence based science and philosophy

.....the dark ages before the enlightenment.
